1 Introduction Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a long-term metabolic condition defined by increased blood glucose levels caused by insulin resistance or reduced insulin secretion [1]. Data from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) indicates that around 537 million people are living with diabetes, comprising 10.5% of the worldwide population, and this figure is expected to rise to 643 million by 2030 [2].
