1 Introduction Ferroelectrics are characterized by the presence of a spontaneous polarization, which generally arises at a structural phase transition from a high-symmetry to a low-symmetry state. This polarization is switchable under an external electric field of sufficient magnitude, not only by complete reversal (180° switching), but also by partial reorientation such as 90° or 135° switching, depending on the crystallographic symmetry of the ferroelectric phase.
