The enteric nervous system (ENS) is an elaborate neural network within the wall of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract that regulates digestive and defensive functions of the gut (1, 2). It consists of two interconnected plexuses of nerve cell bodies, the submucosal plexus that lies in the submucosa and the myenteric plexuses that lies between the longitudinal and circular smooth muscle. There are extensive projections of these neurons throughout the wall of the gut (1, 2).
