Interview

How is social media changing news?

It's making all of us faster, more connected and more prone believing unverified facts.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Truth is stranger than fiction. Let's talk real people.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means you get to ask as many questions as you can of fascinating people, and it means you get to seek truth on behalf of the public.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I don't.

Who do you wish followed you?

More people with good news tips.

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to make a difference in the world, and I liked the idea of being paid to ask questions.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I was co-editor.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The one publishing tomorrow.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read, read, read. Then inquire and write as much as you can. Get yourself a good editor and pay attention.

When's the best time to pitch you?

There is no good time.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I don't believe in pitches. Only tips.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I don't answer pitch questions.

What's your favorite drink?

Iced tea.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Reading, out on a story, and getting there.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Brand X.
