The U.S. Army Has a Recruitment Problem. Here's How to Solve It
The difficulty of recruiting the U.S. Army’s next generation has become not only one of the biggest challenges for the future of the force, but also perhaps its biggest political football. When Army leaders projected late last year that active Army troop strength for 2023 would have a shortfall of almost 20,000 from the projected 485,000, it quickly led to action inside the force and heated debate outside.

Point of Origin: What Comes Next in a World of Advanced Tech Gone Global?
Skip to main content Authors’ note: Useful Fiction is the deliberate blend of nonfiction with narrative communication techniques. Sometimes known as FICINT or “Fictional Intelligence,” the goal is not to replace the traditional white paper, article, or memo, but to achieve greater reach and impact of the research and analysis through sharing them through the oldest communication technology of all: Story.
Opinion | How Ukraine Won The #LikeWar
How Ukraine has been so successful at turning the tables on the supposed Russian masters of information war is crucial to understanding the situation so far in Ukraine and what happens next. It is also a lesson for any other nation, politician, corporation or activist at how to win what I and others call #LikeWar, the hacking of social networks not through malware but through the effective weaponization of social media for clicks, likes and shares.

Microdrones, AI, and VR glasses: A sneak peek into the future of war and how we'll train for it
“The military leader, the commander, is a central figure in our common narratives about war.” So writes Therese Heltberg in her essay “Art, Craft, or Science: How We Think About Military Leadership.” But what goes into the making of that military leader, and how can narrative assist in explaining it? This is the central question at the heart of the following story we call An Eye For A Storm.

Want to Stop the Next Crisis? Teaching Cyber Citizenship Must Become a National Priority
© Photo by Michael Nigro/Pacific Press/LightRocket via Getty Images Pro-Trump protesters attacked the press pool outside the Capitol building and then destroyed their TV production gear. Pro-Trump supporters and far-right forces flooded Washington DC to protest Trump's election loss. To be a responsible member of today’s increasingly digital society requires a new set of “cyber citizenship” skills.
The Global Swarm
"One plan was to use an unmanned aerial vehicle to carry 20kg of TNT to bomb the area, but the plan was rejected because we were ordered to catch him alive." This is what Liu Yuejin, director of China’s public security ministry’s anti-drug bureau, described of the manhunt for Naw Kham, the ringleader of a large drug trafficking outfit based in the Golden Triangle, who was suspected of killing 13 Chinese sailors.
A review of "Burn-In" by P.W. Singer and August Cole
Singer and Cole write what they like to call “useful fiction.” Burn-In highlights both the logistical and the moral issues raised by new technologies. As did its predecessor, Ghost Fleet, which concerned a future war with China, this novel comes with a full set of endnotes to show that it is not purely a work of the imagination. The plot takes place in a dystopian United States in which unconstrained automation has led to mass unemployment and a restive public.

China's Version of GPS is Almost Complete
P.W. Singer & Taylor A. Lee, Popular Science April 3, 2020 On March 9, China moved into the end run of a decades-long project to build its own global navigation satellite system, a project that will make it independent of foreign rivals when it comes to a network that undergirds modern tech, business, and the military. It's called BeiDou.

The Information War Over Trump's Impeachment
When a White House whistleblower reported that Donald Trump asked a foreign nation to “do us a favor” if it wanted U.S. military aid, it didn’t just start an impeachment. It started a war playing out on your screens that could determine the outcome.
Jon Snow Would Actually Make a Great General
“Jon Snow” and “strategic genius” are certainly terms that don’t seem to go together. While Jon is one of the most beloved of characters in Game of Thrones, Ned Stark’s bastard son is often viewed like his “father”—a hero, but not a very smart or strategic one. Viewers see this in everything from Littlefinger’s sneering appraisal of him to Jon’s performance in the Battle of the Bastards, where he easily fell into Ramsay Bolton’s trap.
LIKEWAR by PW Singer Emerson T Brooking Read by George Guidall
George Guidall's sage narration conjures avuncular newscasters like Walter Cronkite and David Brinkley, old-school journalists whose discerning delivery earned trust. And trust is what's needed in this audiobook about the use of social media as a battleground. The authors demonstrate how Facebook, Instagram, and others enable geopolitical forces to target and mislead users.
The online threat that cybersecurity teams don't cover
Businesses increasingly rely on social media for everything from selling products to collecting customer feedback. Their online brands affect every part of their businesses, from employee recruiting efforts to stock share prices. This means they are also competing for the same precious oxygen as geopolitical conflicts and violent struggles.

We've given the police robots. We haven't given them rules. That's a problem.
Getty / Denis Charlet This summer, the fatal shootings of unarmed black men (in St. Paul, Minnesota, Baton Rouge, and elsewhere) and of police officers (in Dallas and Baton Rouge) reenergized the national debate surrounding race relations and the use of force by police in the United States. Yet amid the now all-too-familiar characters – unarmed black men, armed police officers, bystanders with cameras — emerged a new one: a robot with the power to kill.
How the United States Can Win the Cyberwar of the Future
There is perhaps no national security problem more 21st century in both its definition and form than cybersecurity. And yet to solve it, the ready solution in nearly every U.S. national security conversation today is that tried and true 20th-century framework of deterrence. The conventional wisdom echoes back to the Cold War, the last period of long-term conflict.
