Mineral Dynamics Revealed by Fe2+-Catalyzed Recrystallization of U-Incorporated Goethite
Introduction Click to copy section linkSection link copied! Iron (oxyhydr)oxides are widespread in nature. Their mineralogy is highly dynamic, resulting in the common presence of trace elements, including Al, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sn and U. (1−8) For instance, trace elements can substitute for octahedrally coordinated Fe, during the Fe2+-catalyzed transformation of amorphous or nanocrystalline ferrihydrite to more crystalline phases, e.g., goethite, lepidocrocite, magnetite and hematite.
