Editor’s summary Metasurfaces are ultrathin optical elements typically composed of a dense array of subwavelength nanostructures that can effectively scatter, absorb, or emit light. Initially developed as passive devices, efforts are now underway to develop metasurfaces with active optical functionality. Ha et al. reviewed the state of the art of metasurface-based optoelectronic devices, highlighting key achievements, underlying principles, and technological challenges that lie ahead.
