Hospitals and community settings across African LMICs, including South Africa, Tanzania, Nigeria, Rwanda, Botswana, and Ethiopia.

A scoping review and meta-analysis of functioning problems across 41 African countries

Abstract Human functioning is a key indicator of health, yet little is known about functioning profiles across Africa. We conducted a continent-wide profiling of functioning problems that can be improved with rehabilitation among adults with health conditions contributing most to the non-fatal burden of disease in each country (measured according to years lived with disability). Here we identified 1,154 peer-reviewed studies published between 2006 and 2024 from 41 countries across five databases.

Practical insights for enhancing primary care rehabilitation services in low-resource contexts

Background: Rehabilitation services are crucial for addressing the growing burden of functioning problems related to chronic conditions in low and middle-income countries. These services, however, remain limited in South Africa and Zimbabwe’s primary health care (PHC) settings. Aim: To identify recommendations for enhancing the accessibility and quality of rehabilitation services in PHC in South Africa and Zimbabwe from the perspectives of primary care providers (PCPs) and patients.
