Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by progressive loss of nigral dopaminergic neurons, resulting in disabling motor symptoms. Intracerebral transplantation of stem cell-derived dopaminergic progenitors to replace lost endogenous dopaminergic neurons offers a new potentially restorative therapeutic approach for PD.

Why do we need a marker for Parkinson's disease? To improve diagnosis To many, the most intuitive goal for a biomarker is to help diagnose disease. For Parkinson's disease this may be divided into two separate aims: differentiation of susceptible individuals from normals before symptoms develop (sensitivity), and identification of true idiopathic Parkinson's disease from its imitators once symptomatic (specificity).
