Beautiful Photos of Dandelion Dewdrops Prove You Can Find Magic in Your Own Backyard with an iPhone
While Autum had never owned a ‘real camera’, after she received her first iPhone, she says she was pleased with how good the quality of the photos were and how convenient it was to have around. Then, just over two-and-a-half years ago, Autum saw a macro picture posted on Instagram and noticed it was also taken with an iPhone. “I was amazed that someone could take a picture of something so small and with such clear detail with only their phone,” she tells us.
Minimalist Scenes from Pastel-Hued Swimming Pools
Before Mária Švarbová became a photographer, she studied conservation, restoration and archeology, which shines through in her ongoing minimalist series, Swimming Pool. In it, robot-like people with couture model qualities are presented around a pastel-colored swimming pool backdrop, bringing on an almost alien quality. Mária Švarbová took time to explain the inspiration behind her photo series for Feature Shoot.
Surreal, Gravity-Defying Photography Brought to You By 'Mikes Butt'
Mike Dempsey (aka Mikes Butt) is a Los Angeles-based photographer who stuns us with his gravity-defying images that take inspiration from his first love: skating. Each photo he produces combines a touch of danger and surrealism, with skater-esque poses grabbing our attention from afar. Dempsey’s dedication to the craft of photography means that each photo is also shot with as little ‘help’ as possible, involving nail biting stunts to ensure genuine reactions.
Insect Wings Mimic Beautiful Flowers in 'Mimesis'
Mimesis – Precognitus Christium, 2014. Chromogenic print. Format 180 x 180 cm (70.9 x 70.9 in) Mimesis – Lubon Tranquillitatis, 2014. Chromogenic print. Format 180 x 180 cm (70.9 x 70.9 in) You might think these are photographs of beautiful flowers but look closely — very closely — and you’ll see that these are, in fact, insect wings that looks remarkably similar to flower petals.
The Eerie Remains of Abandoned Japanese Amusement Parks, Built to Resemble Disneyland and Other American Fairgrounds
Belgian photographer Reginald Van de Velde had explored many theme parks in Europe before he made his way to Asia, but nothing prepared him for the magnitude of the amusement parks in Japan. His trip to Japan was solely to explore, and he had three major theme parks on his list: Nara Dreamland, Western Village and Family Land. Though, instead of each fun park being alive with rollercoaster screams and bales of cotton candy, these locations were chosen because of their spooky remains.
Model Swims with Sharks in Incredible Underwater Photo Shoot
To many, sharks are to be feared. They’ve had a bad rap over the years and been demonized in the press. But in actual fact, sharks greatly benefit marine ecosystems. That doesn’t stop a handful of countries from killing them though. But take the sharks out of the ecosystem and you’re left with an ocean that is unbalanced for all marine life. One man bringing awareness to the plight of sharks and advocating for their protection is Benjamin Von Wong.
One Photographer is Traveling the World Taking Photos of Doors
Spain England It was while studying computer science abroad in Trento, Italy that Portuguese photographer André Vicente Gonçalves found his passion for photography. During his second year of studies, he changed his entire route in life, applied for a Photography Bachelor’s Degree and began following his passion. He hasn’t looked back since. While traveling, Gonçalves began to document the different windows he came across in the cities he visited.
Behold the Last Remaining Tidal Pools of Southwest England
British photographer Tom Shaw had just finished his 15-year stint as a staff photographer with Getty Images and was beginning a freelance career when his Tidal Sea Pools series started to take shape. “It was an exciting time, and I wanted to spend a week shootings something for myself,” Tom tells us. “A few years earlier while on holiday in Cornwall, I shot a nice picture of some surfers while my wife and I sat on the headland.
This bike light projects an image onto the road in front of you, Batman style!
The Laserlight Core by Beryl will make you feel like a superhero as you cycle through the streets. The Kickstarter project does what no other bike light can do. It projects a “bike lane” — a six metre-long image — onto the road in front of you so that drivers know exactly when a cyclist is nearby. Pioneering product designer Emily Brooke is behind the product. Like most great inventions, she created it out of necessity.
The Alternative Limb Project is the best thing to ever happen to prosthetics
The Alternative Limb Project is turning heads, and for all the right reasons. Through the artistic genius of Sophie Oliveira Barata, her bespoke prosthetic design service has enabled amputees to evolve their prosthetics into works of surreal art.
In Sweden, there's a museum dedicated to the world's most disgusting foods
Maggots, anyone? If you’ve ever been disgusted by a meal set in front of you, welcome to my world – and welcome to a museum dedicated to all the foods we find ‘eww’. Depending on where you come from and how you grew up, you might love Vegemite sandwiches and hate roasted guinea pigs. Others may gag at the sight of maggot-infested cheese but enjoy serving up durian fruit.
This kaleidoscopic mirror art will make you feel like you're trippin balls
Believe it or not, French-American artist Sarah Mehoyas was studying finance before embarking on her career in photography. After switching from the finance world into the arts, Mehoyas sought an MFA at Yale and since her 2015 graduation, has already landed solo exhibitions throughout the US and Europe. Her Speculation series shows us why her work is so popular. In this eye-catching series, Mehoyas swears there is no Photoshop magic at all.
Jack White just helped save 'The Outsiders' house with a cool $30K
A GoFundMe campaign that began in 2016 with the aim of restoring the house from Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders, has finally reached its $75,000 goal thanks to a very famous fan: Jack White. The house was purchased by hip hop artist Danny Boy O’Connor and some of his friends after the rapper made a pilgrimage to visit the landmark way back in 2009. Once sold, O’Connor decided to restore the rundown house to its former glory.
New Yorker creates the funkiest staircase ever, and it's for a good cause
Sasha Bikoff is not afraid of uniqueness. Or eccentric design. Or going over-the-top with colour. That we can see from her latest installment at this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House. For 45 years, interior designers all over have been commissioned to transform an elegant seven-level home on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, into an exciting space showcasing art, furnishings, and technology, with the end goal being to raise money for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.
Chuck E. Cheese robot resurrected as a tone deaf YouTube star in this hilarious video series
If you’re planning on staying home this weekend, allow me to introduce you to hours of laugh-out-loud entertainment. Tampa resident Jared Sanchez has created a YouTube show involving a long-forgotten animatronic doll named The King, a former performer at Chuck E. Cheese’s theatre. Originally thought to have been discarded after the pizza joint rebranded in the mid-1990s, The King was found by Mr. Sanchez on eBay in 2006 for a whopping AU$35,000.
700 metres of wool went into making this epic cross stitch mural
Don’t ever let them tell you cross-stitch is a handheld art. In this larger-than-life mural, yarn adorns the entire wall of a building in the Lisbon district of Vila Franca de Xira, Portugal. The mural is titled Switch-over and was crafted by Ana Martins, a 22-year-old artist who used over 2,300 screws and 700 metres of wool to bring her work to life.
Yay! MUJI just designed micro apartments to share with co-workers
Do you love your co-workers enough to live with them? I can safely say that I don’t (sorry Lost at E Minor editors). For some reason unknown to me, MUJI and Japanese architect Go Hasegawa have come up with a way you can be around your co-workers 24/7. And guess what the funniest thing is — it’s not supposed to be a punishment! This micro-apartment prototype comes out of a problem that employees at Muji’s Shanghai office face. Staff commonly travel for up to three hours to get to work.
In Taiwan, Starbucks opens store made from 29 shipping containers
Starbucks stores are usually pretty uniform in design, but not in this Taiwanese city. In a shopping center in the city of Hualien, 29 shipping containers are stacked together to create a Starbucks, complete with drive-thru service. Opened back in September, the 320-square-meter Starbucks was designed by award-winning Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and is the company’s first store in Asia Pacific to have been built using recycled shipping containers.
Dogs find their true human counterparts in this totally wacky card game
If British photographer Gerrard Gethings approaches you on the street saying you look like a Saint Bernard, take no offense. He’s probably just scouting for his next photo series. In the newly released memory game Do You Look Like Your Dog? Gethings gets players to match dogs with their (almost) human doppelgängers. “The plan was to shoot the dogs, find the humans, style them, then have them behave or pose in a similar way”, he tells The Guardian.
You have never seen a golf clubhouse this beautiful, ever
And you thought golf was just for grandpas. Behold! One of the most beautiful — if not the most beautiful — golf clubhouses in the world. The Golf Exécutif Montréal is located just minutes from downtown Montreal and features nine holes that can be played within two hours, as well as a driving range. But if you’re thinking about those harsh winters of Quebec, you’ll probably be thinking how on earth can golfers enjoy a driving range when snow has piled up metres high.
Weird Al stars in Weezer's cover of "Africa" while parodying "The Sweater Song"
We never thought Toto’s “Africa” could be outdone, but then Weezer came along in May and treated us all to their cover of the classic 1982 track. As if that wasn’t enough, the Los Angeles rockers have recently added a video of their single with none other than “Weird Al” Yankovic taking the reins. It’s got us feeling all sorts of nostalgia. In typical Weird Al fashion, just performing the song wasn’t enough.
New TMBG track talks communism, Ayn Rand sandwiches and beaver hats
More than 35 years on, They Might Be Giants are still soaring. Earlier this month, the Brooklyn alt-rock band released a new video on Dial-A-Song, a service that they use to provide free music to their fans. The video is for the track ‘The Communists Have the Music’. The opening line to the song is “I got handed an Ayn Rand sandwich”, so you know the rockers will be at their anti-establishment, inflammatory best.
That shredded Banksy artwork has been renamed and is on public display
Banksy’s plan seems to have backfired. Earlier this month, in an effort to show the fine art world just how much he objected to his work being sold at auction, Girl With Balloon was shredded at a Sotheby’s auction. The stunt took place right as the gavel came down, selling the piece to an anonymous buyer for US$1.3 million (AUS$1.9 million). The art world was shocked. Banksy fans were amused. And representatives from Banksy’s camp renamed the piece Love Is in the Bin.
Creepy kidnapper van in NYC is put on Airbnb for $69/night
When visiting New York City, why stay at The Plaza when you can stay in someone’s van parked on the streets of Soho? Listed on Airbnb for a modest $69 per night, the “Vintage Custom Van in Soho” is smack bang in the middle of one of New York’s trendiest neighbourhoods and within walking distance of the World Trade Center. The van is valet-parked at a mystery location within Soho and is “hosted” on Airbnb by a Swedish screenwriter named Meng. No, this isn’t an elaborate joke.
Be at one with nature in Idaho's breathtaking Cliff House
Floor-to-ceiling windows? Check. Water views? Check. Built into the side of a goddamn cliff? Double check. Take a peek at Cliff House, a five-bedroom, three-level architectural masterpiece that sits atop a granite boulder above Idaho’s Payette Lake. Impressive or what? Architects from McCall Design and Planning designed the property in such a way that it almost makes you feel like you’re living outdoors.
Terrifying 16th century demon-bird takes a ride on the NYC subway
New York City subway straphangers have probably seen it all. But probably not a medieval character out of a Hieronymus Bosch painting on the 3 train… until now.
Smart: This Dancing Traffic Light Makes Waiting to Cross Much More Fun
This article originally appeared on Lost at E Minor. Since nobody likes to wait at traffic lights, one company, Smart, decided to place a very special set of traffic lights in the middle of Lisbon, Portugal. They allowed random pedestrians to enter an oversized traffic light studio, dance, and their moves were displayed in real time on the traffic lights outside.
Oh no! Poland can't find a huge snake slithering around Warsaw
You could say that it’s pretty good at hide and ssseek. In Poland, authorities are on the lookout for a hungry 16-foot-long python on the loose. A team of police officers, firefighters, and 80 volunteers with four search boats and four drones have ramped up their search for the serpent near Warsaw after its skin was found shed by the banks of the River Vistula. The authorities have advised the public to stay away from the river because, at 16-feet-long, the python can easily break limbs.
Nurse freaks out Tinder by looking for someone with 'healthy kidneys'
For many women, they want a guy with a sense of humour. For some, a man with abs. And for a rare few, they want someone with “both lungs and kidneys.” This is exactly what 26-year-old registered nurse Nicole apparently demanded on her Tinder profile — and now the whole world knows about it. In Nicole’s profile, she says she’s looking for a lifetime partner. She wants someone who is hardworking, humble, trustworthy, and healthy. Sorry, HEALTHY. That was in caps.
The internet is gripped by a simple lemon video and we are all sorts of confused
In the age of the internet, where we are bombarded with war scenes, corruption scandals and the Kardashians on a 24/7 news cycle, it’s nice to know people out there are still enjoying the simplicities of life. Last week, writer, photographer and podcaster Mike Sakasegawa posted a video on Twitter that documented a lemon and its journey down a hill. Watch it for yourself: The video — shot in under 2 minutes — is of nothing special.
The end is nigh! High heel Crocs are now a thing
When Trump became President, we didn’t think it could get much worse. But then Crocs came along and laughed in all our faces. Maybe your next-door neighbour wore them while gardening. Maybe you wore them as a joke on Halloween. But these high heel Crocs take the cake. If there are high heel Crocs out in the world, this only means one thing — that the Crocs company actually want you to wear these beauties, in public.
Build-A-Bear stores shut down after discounted 'Pay Your Age Day' attracts SCORES!
Every Build-A-Bear Workshop was shut down in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. last week after a promise of deep discounts caused store lines to become unruly and unsafe for customers. On Thursday the company held a ‘Pay Your Age Day’ promotion that allowed parents to buy Build-A-Bear toys that matched the age of their child. In some cases, this meant a savings of between $25 – $30, depending on the child’s age, with the minimum price being $1 for any child who was one year old or under.
Banksy hits at Europe's refugee crisis with new murals in Paris
He’s taken on the streets of London, New York, and even Jerusalem with his thought-provoking stenciling, and now, the elusive street artist Banksy has taken over the City of Light. In true Banksy style, there was no hoopla surrounding the new pieces around Paris. And it wasn’t until his work started showing up on social media that the artist confirmed the work as his own.
On a tight budget? These cities are so inexpensive, rent only costs $100 a month
If you find yourself complaining about rental hikes, you might want to take a look at this rent comparison chart and thank god you’re not living in San Francisco (if you are, apologies). Redditor kylekun513 recently took data from Numbeo’s cost of living index and produced a massive infographic that details just how much we’re paying greedy landlords around the world.
What if our fave movie directors designed travel posters?
Take a look at these travel posters and tell me it doesn’t make you wanna book a flight out of here ASAP. The travel-obsessed folks over at Big Domain have been working in the travel industry for over a decade, but this is the first time they’ve ever sold cities like this. They’ve taken their favourite movie directors and some of the world’s most famous locations, and merged how they think each director would sell that hotspot.
A nesting bird puts Canada's Bluesfest on hold, becomes a viral sensation
A mother bird has put a huge delay on one of Canada’s largest music festivals — and we’re kind of digging the attention she and her eggs are getting. Ottawa’s Bluesfest begins on July 5th and runs for 10 days. This year’s line up includes Bryan Adams, Shawn Mendes, Foo Fighters, Beck and Rae Sremmurd — pretty big names in the music business. But while setting up the festival’s main stage, organizers found a killdeer and her four eggs on the grounds.
15-year-old girl wins karma for life with her ASL assistance on flight
Just when you’d lost all faith in humanity, along comes 15-year-old Clara Daly and her feel-good charm. While on a recent flight to California, Clara and her mother met a 64-year-old man named Tim Cook who is both deaf and blind. He was travelling alone and having a bit of trouble communicating with flight attendants, so when they put a call out to passengers to help with sign language, Clara stood up to help.
You need 20,000 followers to take a pic at this exclusive L.A. mural
Last week a mural popped up along Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles with a sign that read “For verified influences and people with over 20,000 followers only”. A security guard was placed outside the mural tent and anyone who wanted a pic with those angel wings behind them had to verify their 20,000 followers. Or have that coveted Twitter blue tick (ahem, we’re still waiting on ours). The surprising bit about this story is that people actually showed up.
A student was awarded $350,000 after his needy GF tried to sabotage his career
File this one under “dodged a big fat bullet”. Talented clarinetist Eric Abramovitz has won a lawsuit against his ex-girlfriend after she faked emails and caused her boyfriend to lose his place at the famed Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles. In 2013, Abramovitz applied for a two-year scholarship to the school which would’ve paid his entire tuition, room and board amounting to $50,000 a year.
Watch Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant react to 8-year-old's rendition of Good Times Bad Times
Yoyoka Soma is only eight years old, but she’s already gained 13,000 YouTube followers and a shoutout from Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant. The Japanese drumming prodigy began playing the drums when she was just two years old and within a couple of years she was already performing in her family’s band, Kaneaiyoyoka.
Internet's latest villain "Permit Patty" is accused of racism as she calls cops on 8-year-old black girl
Last week, a video emerged online of a white woman calling the cops on an 8-year-old black girl who had been selling water in San Francisco. The video has gained more than 1 million views and the woman, renamed “Permit Patty” by Twitter users, has been ripped to shreds online. The little girl selling water out of the front of her home is Jordan Rodgers, whose mother recently lost her job. Jordan was also selling water to pay for a trip to Disneyland.
Labia necklaces are now a thing... and we'll take two!
Look away now, Mum. This designer vagina necklace is going to make you feel all sorts of awkward. Blogger, TV personality and overall teller of TMI Tracy Kiss, has left us all with a sudden onset of PTSD with her latest accessory. After undergoing the knife to remove excess skin from her labia last year due to years of pain below the belt, the queen of upcycling decided to keep what the surgeon cut out. And then she turned it into a necklace. Because that’s what you do these days, folks.
These reimagined cartoon characters are making us feel all kinds of weird
Spanish illustrator and creative visionary Juan Carlos Paz has taken the brilliance of our favourite cartoons and made them even better. The Madrid-based creative takes every beloved character — from The Simpsons to Sponge Bob — and gives them a surrealist makeover by deconstructing their most famous features. Homer Simpson gets a Dali-esque transformation with a donut eye and dislocated facial features, while Mickey Mouse is the stuff of nightmares with his bulbous cartoony eyes.
Childish Gambino is headlining this year's Spilt Milk music fest and we are excited AF
Canberra, you are in for one hell of a treat this year. Come November, Childish Gambino will be headlining the Spilt Milk music fest in the capital city, accompanied by a huge lineup of artists. Spilt Milk has been a staple of the Canberra music scene since 2016 and has seen the likes of Lorde, Vance Joy and Tash Sultana take the stage — with tickets so popular they’ve sold out in minutes.
Japanese worker shamed on TV for taking lunch break three minutes early
In what must be one of the most surprising stories of the week, Japanese officials were forced to apologise on TV recently after a civil servant was found to have left his post three minutes before his official lunch break started. The unnamed 64-year-old employee of Kobe waterworks bureau was found to have left his desk early on more than 26 occasions over seven months, which put him in violation of a public service law.
Heads up! Eating 150 vitamin gummies for breakfast will do your liver serious damage
Here’s a story to tell the kids so they never ever have the urge to eat more than the recommended daily dose of gummy vitamins. In this video narrated by YouTube’s Chubbyemu — a practicing medical practitioner in the U.S. — we are presented with the story of “TJ”. TJ is a 14-year-old boy who was seen in the ER suffering from muscle weakness, stomach pain and a broken arm.
John Travolta's 'Gotti' was so bad it got 0% on Rotten Tomatoes
It joins a small but exclusive list of movies – which include The Ridiculous 6 and Superbabies: Baby Geniuses 2 – that have received a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. John Travolta looked to make a comeback in 2016 when he portrayed slimy US attorney Robert Shapiro in The People v. O.J. Simpson. He gave such a flawless performance, he was said to have “unTravolta’d himself.” A feat, if ever there was one. But it’s 2018 and Travolta has just made headlines again for another unforgettable performance.
Woah! This abandoned Cypriot airport has finally been uncovered by urban explorers
For 44 years, the Nicosia International Airport in Cyprus has sat, forgotten by the world after it was abandoned during the 1970’s Turkey-Cyprus conflict. This year, urban exploring pro Bob Thissen set foot in the airport to capture just what had been left behind. When you watch the short video of this adventure, you can’t help but feel a bit creeped out by the empty rows of seats, the stationery jumbo jets and the uninviting barbed wire.
