Interview
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I'm an 80's child, of course I did.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
I don’t just report, I translate stories into something that resonates with people. Sharing my finds and creating engagement makes me happy.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#BernieSandersMittens is my fave, because it didn't matter who you loved politically, you made a photo with Bernie in it WITH MITTENS!
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Via email
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram - not much politics there.
Why did you become a journalist?
I fell into it. I started blogging in 2007 and learned how important stories were.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
No, I wanted to hang out with friends at the roller rink and go to concerts. I did write a lot of poetry.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
It isn’t one story, it’s the consistency in how I show up for my audience. I’ve built trust over time by only sharing what I believe in.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Stay true to who you are, and always lead with honesty and transparency. Your voice is your power, use it to tell stories that matter.
When's the best time to pitch you?
I check email often but after 5:00 not many people email me so I usually see these first.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
The best pitch I ever got was short, smart, and actually felt like it was written for me. It referenced a piece I’d written, explained why their brand aligned with my voice, and pitched a fun angle
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I have 2 equally bad pitches. The one for jar sauce. I'm Italian, I would never use jar sauce. The other was for a ghost tour, Umm NO!
What's your favorite drink?
On the beach- a pina colada. With apizza, Foxon Park birch beer (soda). I also make signature cocktails at parties and daily love my water.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Traveling w/ my husband, friends, or family. By the pool or beach, having a party, or on an adventure, ISO of a waterfall or an amazing spa.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
For travel, I love Condé Nast Traveler. For a fun read, Bustle is my go-to.
