The Liberal Scholars Who Influenced Trump’s Attack on Birthright Citizenship
Various academic peers deemed their novel reading “seriously flawed,” “simply puzzling,” and “morally incoherent.” “People were shocked,” recalled the Harvard immigration scholar Gerald Neuman. “The settled understanding had been settled for so long.” Undocumented immigrants, critics pointed out in a flurry of law-review essays, were obviously bound by the U.S. legal system.

Disappointed but not surprised
As I write, Senator My Boo is questioning someone about that shower of muppets above adding a high-profile journalist to a Signal chat about intensifying World War 3 (but only if it’s brown people getting bombed, ofc). Don’t ask me who’s being questioned – I’m too entranced by Senator My Boo’s glossy locks to care. Angry Jon Ossoff is by far the sexxxiest Jon Ossoff. Er, where was I? Oh, right. Sorry.

Government clarifies non-dom policy: What do we know now?
In this “stop press” edition of our Globally Speaking e-bulletin, we provide an update on how the publication of the new Government’s policy paper on 29 July 2024 provides clarity on the proposed reform of the UK’s non-domiciled (non-dom) regime, and what remains unknown. Hawke’s Bay had no emergency plan for a big flood
Society Hawke’s Bay had no emergency plan for a big flood And it didn’t need to. No regional council is required to make detailed emergency plans for natural disasters. The vast majority of Hawke’s Bay residents, however, live in on a flood plain and what happened on the night of February 13-14, 2023, was a test case in unpreparedness. The family had climbed into their roof cavity in the dark—two parents, two young children. Above them, the wind screamed.
Non-dom analysis: UK returners
I am a British expat living abroad. What should I be thinking about? British expats are typically UK domiciled (“UK dom“) but non-UK resident for UK tax purposes. The extent to which they are likely to be affected by the changes to the taxation of non-UK domiciled individuals announced by the Chancellor in his Spring Budget of 6 March 2024 is discussed below. Geography The year of silt Twelve months on from Cyclone Gabrielle, many people are still fighting to return home. There was a man: a personal tribute to John Cairney
The Scottish actor, author, and artist John Cairney died in September 2023, aged 93. It seems only appropriate to have waited until Burns Night to pay him homage. In 2021, The Herald published an ‘Agenda’ piece calling him “the finest incarnation of Robert Burns. Perhaps of any human being. Possibly of all time.” It said that novelist Gordon Williams had asked, “If Rabbie came back today, would he hold a John Cairney supper?” It was only partly a joke.

B is for Bannon
Word on the street is that multiple-shirted Baron Harkonnen lookalike Steve Bannon is involved in the attempts to overthrow Lula and democracy in Brazil. You think it’s a coincidence that Bolsonaro headed for Florida? Everyone’s all “oh he’s international coup-ing now” like he hasn’t done it for years. Here is a thing I wrote about one thing Bannon did to my country, published a year ago today. He is still at large. Here’s another thing Bannon did to my country. He is still at large.
Book Review: Topical Preaching in a Complex World by Sam Chan and Malcolm Gill
Book Review: Topical Preaching in a Complex World by Sam Chan and Malcolm Gill 12 November 2022 This book is timely in its release. As a young adults leader at my local church, the people I often preach to are drawn more towards content that is topical rather than expository. The reason? We live in a world where people are flooded with content minute by minute. The younger generation has learned to cope with this by prioritising relevant content that grabs their attention.
M is for MP Scummery
If you’re British, and Gen X or Boomer, you may be finding that everything that was innocent and pleasurable in your earlier life has become besmirched over time. You loved Cadbury’s chocolate, but now it’s owned by Americans, the bars are far smaller and cost far more, and it’s getting perilously close to being like Hershey’s ‘chocolate’. You loved Bunty comics, but someone on Twitter just made a meme about the new Prime Minister that’s based on the cover of Bunty but with one letter changed.
K is for Kleptofascists
By 2019, Brandon was security minister, and threatened EU citizens in the UK with deportation if they didn’t apply for post-Brexit settled status by the end of 2020, during an interview with a German paper. Then said his remarks were taken out of context. Narrator: “They were not.” Lubov Chernukhin gave tens of thousands of pounds to Brandon, 10,000 of that less than a year ago. Let’s have a quick peek at her. USSR-born, moved to the US as a teen, studied there, moved to the UK in 1999.

ABC News Chief Washington Correspondent Jonathan Karl said, “One of the key figures here is Mike Pence. He said this week he is willing to testify if you ask. Are you going to ask him?” August 21, 2022 Cheney said, “So we’ve been in discussions with his counsel.” She continued, “Look, he played a critical role on January 6. In 2020 the MP for a constituency encompassing Newmarket racecourse, then-Health Secretary Matt Hancock, gave oversight of Covid Test and Trace to Jockey Club board member Dido Harding, and awarded Covid contracts worth almost £777 million to Grand National sponsor Randox, paymaster of disgraced lobbyist-MP Owen Paterson, whose late wife was chair of Aintree racecourse and also on the board of the Jockey Club, which owns Aintree.
Watch: Despite Their Begging, DeSantis Won't Be 'The View's' WHOOPI Cushion

E is for Emergency Edition
I don’t usually post on Saturdays. But I missed two issues this past week, because, SCENES. And something’s come up that should be known of and discussed as widely as possible. I should start by saying that I believe there were shenanigans in the 2019 UK General Election, and believe there will be worse to come in the next GE, whenever that will be. And I believe a bad government which knows it can’t win on its platform due to epic rancidity will resort to more and more methods of cheating to win.
E is for Elysium
I read Penny Mordor’s book so you don’t have to. Apologies that this post is a day late. It was 40° here yesterday, too hot to think straight. Because, unfettered capitalism. Speaking of which. Don’t be fooled by the title. Greater: Britain After the Storm is a non-fiction book, not a Stephen King-style apocalyptic novel. Well, then again, it’s sort of both those things. It was published on 21 January 2021. Anything else interesting happen in January 2021? No? Say, around the 6th? Well, anyway.
A Graceless Fall: The Dangers That Remain in the Twilight of Johnson’s Reign – Byline Times
Chaotic, self-centred and unpredictable, Boris Johnson is still a constitutional conundrum, says Rachel Morris Share EmailTwitterFacebook While crowds swayed outside Downing Street last week, singing “bye bye Boris”, commentators were wondering whether Boris Johnson really had resigned. This is a natural outcome of the still-Prime Minister’s track record of believability, combined with the weasel words that accompanied his ‘resignation’ speech.
Postscript: John Bennet
The main thing about John Bennet's class in magazine writing at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism was that every week you had to read your assignment out loud. Just typing that transports me back to late nights in my student apartment in 2004 - trying a sentence and saying it, deleting a word and saying the sentence again, pacing around a bit, tackling the next sentence then tinkering till I got the little surge of pleasure that comes when words make a rhythm.
