Interview

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I keep it simple. Google Docs, the basic recording app on my phone. Sometimes automatic transcribers like Otter.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram, by far. It's the least "me, me, me" of the social networks, and some people post legitimately great photos.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not. I had no idea I would end up a reporter. The closest I came was working on the yearbook, taking pictures and formatting layouts.

When's the best time to pitch you?

In the morning. It allows me to turn a pitch into a quick, daily turnaround, or use it to start working on a bigger story.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That identity politics is necessarily a bad thing. The need for representation stems from diversity. Covering voting blocs just makes sense.
