Dismantling Structural Racism in the Academic Residency Clinic
The adverse effects of dual loyalties in academic medicine echo and extend a long history of racial capitalism. Harkening back to medical experimentation on Black and Brown bodies, the disproportionate burden of health risks arising from dual loyalties represents similar exploitation of marginalized communities.19,20 The normalization of this insidious process reifies the notion that some populations are expendable.
Despite every health-care setting in the state being overwhelmed, the state coordinated a robust multidisciplinary team to staff a shelter.
A recent Journal article about the state’s COVID homeless response published on Dec. 6 ("Vile conditions at site for homeless," News) unfortunately did not consider the full scope of the state’s continuing efforts through an unprecedented public health crisis. One April morning during the height of the pandemic in Rhode Island, 43-year-old Mr. H. picked up the phone in his hotel room and dialed our primary care clinic. “You wouldn’t believe how awesome they’re treating me here,” he said.
On Incarceration and Health - Reframing the Discussion
What remained of Mr. P.’s hair had come undone from the tight braid he’d fastened before his last chemotherapy treatment. His facial bones now protruded, as if a sculptor had gotten carried away. There was no mirror in his cell at the maximum-security prison where Mr. P. had spent more than half his life, but he didn’t need to see himself to know his body was decaying.
The health impact of incarceration
This is a refrain that we hear from many of our patients who have been incarcerated in California’s prisons for decades.
