Abstract The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the heterotic potential and combining ability of cucumber genotypes for the development of early maturing, high yielding and better quality hybrids suitable for tropical environment. The experimental material consisted of eight monoecious parental lines, which were intercrossed using a half-diallel mating design (excluding reciprocals), resulting in 28 F₁ hybrids. A commercial hybrid, ‘Nazia’, was included as a standard check.

1 Introduction Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is an edible bulbous crop cultivated and consumed worldwide. It is not only consumed as a condiment and a green vegetable but is also known for its remarkable medicinal and nutraceutical properties (Tattelman 2005). Among such health benefit effects, garlic consumption can help lower blood pressure, blood cholesterol and blood sugar; prevent blood clotting; and contain anti-carcinogenic properties (Bordia et al. 1989).
