I write, shoot and post stories that engage people across metro Detroit and Michigan.

First place, Colorado Press Association

2013 - Sustained coverage

The Coloradoan newsroom received this one for coverage of the High Park Fire that burned more than 89,000 acres west of Fort Collins. I raced ahead of the wildfire when it started moving north, catching neighbors as they hurried to pack their cars. I checked in with them in the following days, weeks and months for updates. Also tagged along with people to get exclusive access behind the military-guarded fire perimeter and kept in close contact with fire officials for daily updates.

First place, Colorado Press Association

2012 - News story

"Downtown after dark: Riot aftermath" An in-depth story following up with people who fought with police in a riot that ensued after a music festival in downtown Fort Collins. Also examined changes in policing to avoid another riot.

Third place, Colorado Press Association

2012 - Deadline news

"Fort Collins police chief leaving post" Late-afternoon news that the chief was resigning allowed little time to pull together a story. A deep Rolodex and persistence helped reveal that the chief — embattled with controversy over a lieutenant indicted on perjury charges — had fallen into disfavor with the city manager.

2011 - Story-photo combination

With the Summit Daily News

First place, Colorado AP

2008 - Investigative reporting

Numerous interviews and hours spent listening to audio-casette tapes of public meetings led to exposure of small-town corruption among officials in Olathe, Colo. (For the Montrose Daily Press)

Hearst Journalism Award

2007 - In-depth reporting, seventh place of 20

As a summer intern in Montrose, Colo., I dug into the connection between immigration and agriculture. Sometimes that meant shadowing Mexican immigrants picking corn in fields, interviewing them in Spanish. Federal visa programs put an especially heavy strain on Colorado corn farmers, as their harvest comes later than the rest of the country. With a cap on total visas allowed nationwide, the farmers have a hard time getting workers and are forced to resort to creative means.
