Ralph Miliband, If Labour Wins . . ., NLR 142, July–August 2023
There are countries where the looming defeat of a government gives rise to complex judgements concerning the identity of its successor. Britain is not one of them. The decline of the present Conservative government, which has recently assumed spectacular proportions, and its ever-more-likely defeat at the approaching general election, can have only one beneficiary: the Labour Party.
Lenin’s The State and Revolution
Marx famously proclaimed the need to “smash” the bourgeois state. But what does that mean in practice? If our aim is a democratic, non-bureaucratic socialism, what kind of state should we be striving for?
Towards a Democratic Socialism
The great advances made in Marxist state theory over the decade after 1968 did not initially yield clear strategic signposts that would validate Marx’s famous injunction that the point of theory was not just to understand the world but to change it.
The Coup in Chile

Transcribed & marked up by Einde O’Callaghan for the Marxists’ Internet Archive. I WHAT happened in Chile on 11 September 1973 did not suddenly reveal anything new about the ways in which men of power and privilege seek to protect their social order: the history of the last 150 years is spattered with such episodes.

Ralph Miliband’s Masterpiece at 50
The illusions of the neoliberal era — that the market should or even could be freed from the state, or that an unstoppable process of capitalist globalization was bypassing even the most powerful of states — have suddenly dissipated. One of the greatest misconceptions of neoliberals was the notion that states and markets were in opposition to each other. Since then, it was only on the most superficial level that it could have been thought that states were in retreat at all.
What Bernie Sanders and His Supporters Can Learn from Salvador Allende
Since 2016, the idea of socialism as a viable and desirable goal has been on the agenda in American politics for the first time in a century. Until very recently, living American socialists had no experience tackling the question of how the working-class movement might wield state power.
Building Socialism From Below
Capitalism keeps creating socialists, despite its best efforts. When people are dominated, they tend to resist: they build networks of mutual aid and find power in collective action. They begin to imagine a world organized along different lines, one where the wealth they make in common is held in common rather than hoarded by the few.

Counter-Hegemonic Struggles
The rise of mass democracy presented economic and political elites with a conundrum. How, with the political enfranchisement of ever-greater parts of the population, could they maintain an order that still left many behind in the economic and social spheres? Did the rise of democracy mean the end of capitalism? In retrospect, their fears might seem paranoid — of course capitalism could withstand a broader electorate. But their anxiety vaulted them into action.
Beyond Social Democracy
These days, as austerity sweeps the advanced capitalist world and welfare states lie in tatters, it’s easy to romanticize post–World War II social democracy. The epoch of strong unions, regulated markets, and rising wages seems like a golden age compared to our current era of plutocratic capitalism. Yet the sepia tones can distort our vision. The European social-democratic parties were populated with leaders who had reconciled themselves to capitalism and a US-dominated global order.
Reflections on Anti-Communism
Anti-communism, it seems, is losing some of its currency. None of the familiar red-baiting tricks doomed Bernie Sanders’s run for the presidency. And among young people, whose memory of the Soviet Union is hazy at best, anti-communism appears a fusty old doctrine, a historical artifact with no real relevance. Yet for the better part of the twentieth century, anti-communism permeated international politics.
Ralph Miliband: Reflections on the Crisis of Communist Regimes. New Left Review I/177, September-October 1989.
The massacre in Tiananmen Square last June is unlikely to be the last violent expression of the deep and multiple crises—economic, social, political, ethnic, ideological, moral—which grip many Communist regimes, and which will in due course most probably grip them all. A vast ‘mutation’ is going on throughout the Communist world, and undoubtedly constitutes one of the great turning points in the history of the twentieth century.
The Coup in Chile
I> now propose to return to the question of class struggle and class war and to the conservative forces which wage it, with particular reference to Chile, though the considerations I am offering here do not only apply to Chile, least of all in terms of the nature of the conservative forces which have to be taken into account, and which I shall examine in turn, relating this to the forms of struggle in which these different forces engage: To speak of “the conservative forces,” as I have done...

Corbyn’s accession to the leadership of the Labour Party, and the campaign conducted over the past six weeks, has shifted the space of the politically acceptable: talk of public ownership and common good, once deemed electoral poison, are back on the agenda. We had steeled ourselves for the worst. At Novara Media, we ran an all-night live election livestream, and as part of our preparation, I had jotted some notes to guide our commentary: ‘ten year project’ among them, ‘respectable truce’ another.

Since storming to victory on September 14th 2015 with 59.5% of the vote in Labour's leadership election, Jeremy Corbyn has faced many challenges; including from within his own party. On Saturday he dealt with the most significant threat to his leadership to date. He increased his win to 61.8% in the leadership election, an unarguable mandate from his party members. The results of this weekend will have an overwhelming effect on the landscape of British politics.

"Jeremy Corbyn's victory means Labour's living dead have been vanquished—and English politics has come to life again". Tariq Ali, writing for the Independent, expresses much of the energy surrounding Jeremy Corbyn's storming entrance to become the next leader of the Labour Party. In 1960, Ralph Miliband, writing for the very first issue of New Left Review, is far more sober about the Labour Party's past, present and future and the battle for socialism.
The Capitalist State--Reply to N. Poulantzas. New Left Review I/59, January-February 1970.
I very much welcome Nicos Poulantzas’s critique of The State in Capitalist Society in the last issue of NLR: this is exactly the kind of discussion which is most likely to contribute to the elucidation of concepts and issues that are generally agreed on the Left to be of crucial importance for the socialist project, yet which have for a very long time received altogether inadequate attention, or even no attention at all.
Beyond Social Democracy
From The Socialist Register 1985/6, pp.476-489. Downloaded with thanks from the Socialist Register Website. Transcribed & marked up by Einde O’Callaghan for the Marxists’ Internet Archive. In this essay, we seek to answer two closely related questions: first, why socialists in advanced capitalist countries should want to move beyond social democracy; and secondly, what are the requirements and implications of such a move.

MIA > Archive > Miliband Ralph Miliband From The Socialist Register 1983, pp.103-120. Downloaded with thanks from the Socialist Register Website. Transcribed & marked up by Einde O’Callaghan for the Marxists’ Internet Archive. To speak of socialist advance in Britain a short time after the General Election of June 1983 may seem rather strange.
