1 Introduction Water-soluble copolymers issued from the copolymerization of acrylamide and the quaternized form of N,N-dimethylaminoethyl acrylate (DMAEA) are produced on a very large scale in the industry. They are used as coagulants or flocculants in a wide range of applications, including wastewater treatment [1], oil extraction [2], or in papermaking [3] (Figure 1). DMAEA itself can be synthesized by the transesterification of methyl acrylate and N,N-dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE).
