Ramsey Elkholy’s Biography

Ramsey Elkholy is a guitarist, producer, songwriter, and anthropologist who established the indietronica collective Monotronic in 2016. The project was conceived as an alternative to the traditional band model. Rather than centering on a single frontperson, he envisioned a musical environment where every instrument contributes equally to a unified sonic landscape.

Monotronic operates as a collaborative force. Each musician is encouraged to bring individual textures, ideas, and influences into the creative process. Elkholy prioritizes cohesion over ego, shaping songs that feel layered, immersive, and interconnected. The result is music that evolves organically, driven by chemistry and shared intention rather than formula. This philosophy gives Monotronic a distinctive identity within the indie and electronic music scenes.

An Academic Perspective on Creativity

His academic achievements deeply inform Elkholy’s artistic sensibility. He earned a PhD in Anthropology and authored Being and Becoming: Embodiment and Experience Among the Orang Rimba of Sumatra. His research examined how a community of rainforest foragers in Indonesia experiences identity and environment through daily life and embodied practice.

This scholarly background influences the way Elkholy approaches music. Anthropology sharpened his awareness of rhythm as a social connection and sound as a cultural expression. In both research and songwriting, he explores how individuals relate to their surroundings and to one another. His compositions often carry an undercurrent of reflection, shaped by an understanding of how human experience is structured by place and community.

Travel as a Creative Catalyst

Before founding Monotronic, Elkholy spent three years backpacking around the world. His travels took him across Asia and Southeast Asia, where he immersed himself in diverse musical traditions and cultural practices. In Calcutta, he studied Indian music, gaining insight into complex rhythmic cycles and melodic improvisation. He later conducted two years of anthropological fieldwork with the Orang Rimba tribe in Sumatra.

Life in the rainforest became a defining influence. Ramsey Elkholy Monotronic has described falling asleep each night to a dense layering of insects and wildlife that felt like a living orchestra. The natural polyrhythms and ambient textures of the forest shaped his approach to arrangement and atmosphere. These influences are woven into Monotronic’s sound, which blends indie rock, electronic production, and global elements into cohesive compositions.

Originally from New York City, Elkholy now lives in Los Angeles. There, he transformed his garage into a recording studio, creating a personal space dedicated to experimentation and collaboration.

The Arrival of Waiting for You

In January 2026, Monotronic released Waiting for You, an album that blends indie rock, pop, and indietronica into a polished, cinematic body of work. The release included music videos for “Looking Away,” “Everything Moves,” “Sun Song,” “Photograph,” and “Kettle Song.” Three of these videos debuted at number one on VEVO.

The album features bassist Mohini Dey on “Close Enough” and legendary drummer Omar Hakim, known for his work with Daft Punk and David Bowie, who performed drums across the record. Hakim’s rhythmic precision adds depth and energy throughout the project. Critics have praised the album’s introspective lyrics and synth-driven soundscapes, noting its cohesive tone and genre-blending ambition.

The accompanying visuals reinforce the album’s imaginative character. “Everything Moves” was filmed inside an escape room in Los Angeles, reflecting urgency and momentum. “Kettle Song” incorporates K-pop dancers, Samurai imagery, and an oversized kettle drum from a recent Godzilla film, blending spectacle with artistry. Elkholy wrote all of the album’s songs, many during reflective time spent along the beaches of Tulum, Mexico.

From Debut Recognition to Touring Success

Monotronic’s self-titled debut album in 2019 marked a turning point for the collective. The release received praise from Rolling Stone, Relix, Rock Cellar, and Hype Magazine. Over time, the project has included a rotating lineup of accomplished musicians who have performed or recorded with artists such as Daft Punk, Joe Jackson, Chic, Robert Randolph, The Spin Doctors, and Dweezil Zappa.

The band has performed at respected New York City venues and major festivals, including Disc Jam, Meeting of the Minds, and MUSEXPO. In the fall of 2025, Monotronic embarked on a sold-out United States tour, with performances in Denver, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and two Texas cities.

Singles That Expanded the Sound

Following their debut, Monotronic released a series of singles that sustained critical attention. “Kids of Summer” and “Buy Yourself a Dream” both premiered at number one on VEVO. Additional singles such as “Just Another Day,” “Livin’ in a Lie,” and “In Between,” featuring Russel Graham on vocals, continued to refine the project’s direction.

“In Between” was praised by The Big Takeover Show for its blend of dance energy and pop sensibility. Rolling Stone described “Looking Away” as a track with festival potential and highlighted the EP’s Tame Impala-inspired cover of Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.” Obscure Sound called the cover stellar, while other outlets emphasized the song’s emotional resonance and replay value.

Originally released during the pandemic, “Kids of Summer” was later reworked with Omar Hakim and paired with a vibrant music video filmed throughout Manhattan. Featuring skateboarders, breakdancers, psychedelic visuals, and Elkholy’s dog Snookie riding a skateboard, the video celebrated the vitality of New York summers. It debuted at number one on VEVO’s Incoming Indie playlist.

Through scholarship, travel, and collective creativity, Ramsey Elkholy continues to guide Monotronic’s evolution. His work reflects a commitment to collaboration, cultural awareness, and music that bridges boundaries while remaining deeply human.
