I started writing when I was a kid—mostly stuff about dogs, cats, bugs, baseball, and my mom. But throughout my life and many years of diverse work experience and exploration, there has been one common theme: a fascination with storytelling. Shortly after graduating college with a degree in economics, I found myself pulled into the world of journalism and communications.

I was hooked, working up to 70 hours a week on the student paper and enjoying every minute. I traveled all over the country …

What was your first job as a journalist?

Wrote an article on a boxer while in college for The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, Va. I read it once in a van, never saw it again.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. Learned how to type on one. Still like to pull one out and just type sometimes.

How is social media changing news?

Greater access, but also the expectation of "free."
