While political analysts and historians will debate the reason for Donald Trump's surprise 2016 victory for many years, one issue above all animated forgotten portions of the electorate and allowed him to win states Republicans had not in many, many years: trade.
Opinion | Knoxville state senators tout success of 2018 legislative session
For the past eight years, our legislative sessions have been overwhelmingly successful. This one was no exception. We faithfully stayed the successful course of the last eight years while tackling new challenges. We continued cutting taxes, limiting spending and building the rainy-day fund. Tennessee’s credit remains Triple-A rated and our debt low. Our primary objective this year was the same as it always is: the passage of a balanced budget.
Lt. Gov. McNally offers Thanksgiving thoughts
While Christmas reigns supreme as a holiday marking the birth of our Lord, I have always felt a special connection with Thanksgiving. These days Christmas unfortunately includes ubiquitous commercialism which can distract us from the true meaning of the day. Thanksgiving stands apart from all that. This day gives us an opportunity to reflect and take stock of our many blessings. Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday. This day and the origins of our nation are intimately intertwined.

Randy McNally: Thankful for Tennessee
Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday. This day and the origins of our nation are intimately intertwined. Thanksgiving is about who we are and from where we came. As we move forward as a nation, this should be in the front of our minds. In September 1620, 102 pilgrims set sail from England on the Mayflower. After a 66-day journey across the Atlantic, they arrived far north of their intended destination. Many died of starvation and disease.
Randy McNally: Never forget our veterans
Coolidge’s words encapsulate Veterans Day perfectly. Our soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines face daily challenges that we will never encounter. When most of us go to work, we leave our house, we do our job and we come home. It is different for those who serve. Every day they report for work, they put themselves at risk: for deployment, for permanent disability and death. And they do it all for us. They do it so that we may remain free, prosperous and safe.
Celebrating our independence
As we celebrate the declaration of our independence from the British empire, it is important to remember the history behind the holiday. While much of the focus is on BBQ, ball games and fireworks, it is important to reflect on the real meaning of the day.The Fourth of July is not just a day on the calendar or a day off work. It is a date that marks a seminal event, not just in our history, but in the history of the world.
