This is an observational study so the findings reflect correlation, not causation. The comparison group chosen by the researchers is also a bit odd: they compared people who chose to get the shingles vaccine to those who chose to get the pneumococcal vaccine. Note that pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for individuals who have certain medical conditions, like heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, and cancer.
