Baraka: Newark is doing its part on homelessness. The rest of New Jersey must do theirs
OPINION A recent state report said that 64% percent of the people staying in Newark’s homeless shelters come from outside the city. Of the people experiencing unsheltered homelessness, only one in five are Newark residents, which is why this internal report from the Department of Community Affairs calls Newark “a magnet for regional unmet needs.” But by the region, the DCA report means well beyond Essex County.
Opinion: A healthier Newark, built together
A few weeks ago, we stood together in Newark’s South Ward to break ground on a $48 million wellness center — a project that will bring primary care, maternity services, a federally qualified health center, a YMCA, and a pharmacy together under one roof in a community that has waited generations for exactly this type of investment. Shovels in the dirt are a small gesture. What they represent is not.
Newark's contributions - New Jersey Globe
OPINION It seems New Jersey Shore area Republicans have made a sport of piling on Newark. Last September, State Sen. Declan O’Scanlan sent a letter to Gov. Phil Murphy urging him to put Newark under state oversight, after he criticized how we spent part of our $78 million surplus. Six months earlier he attacked Newark Board of Education spending, without regard to our 86% high school graduation rates or climbing literacy results.
