OPINION Newark sits at the intersection of all major roads and transportation hubs in the metro area, and has long been the economic engine of the region. So, it makes sense that the County of Essex chooses to place its courts, colleges, social service buildings and parks and park offices in Newark. In all, Essex County owns 55 tax-exempt properties in Newark.

As primary housing falls further and further from the reach of working families, it is incumbent on municipal governments to make rents affordable for residents and protect them from predatory landlords. In Newark we are putting forth several pieces of legislation that will give even minimum-wage earners a chance to rent quality market rate apartments. Broad guidelines for affordable housing, while well-meaning, may not fit the needs of residents in many of our cities.

OPINION A recent state report said that 64% percent of the people staying in Newark’s homeless shelters come from outside the city. Of the people experiencing unsheltered homelessness, only one in five are Newark residents, which is why this internal report from the Department of Community Affairs calls Newark “a magnet for regional unmet needs.” But by the region, the DCA report means well beyond Essex County.
