Why medical simulation training belongs in every rotation
It was my first week of clinical rotations, the transition that I had spent years waiting for. Finally, being able to take care of patients. I was a newly minted clinical-phase medical student assigned an evening shift in a busy Chicago emergency department, eager to learn from clinical experience rather than a textbook or Anki deck. The shift had been relatively quiet, and only 30 minutes remained as I finished my final note and began mentally clocking out. Then the ambulance bay doors swung open.
Driving medical education reform through intellectual honesty
We are nearing the end of the academic year, and I recently found myself standing in front of a room of first-year medical students offering what I called “observations.” Not punishments. Not a lecture. Observations. And an invitation. Because what I had been seeing was concerning: academic dishonesty, inappropriate use of artificial intelligence (AI), emotional volatility, and a level of disengagement that felt at odds with a curriculum intentionally designed for presence and reflection.
Why clinician education must prioritize nutrition training
When I began coordinating GI research in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), I noticed something unexpected: Second- and third-year GI fellows, bright, motivated, steeped in medical science, had received little to no formal training on diet’s role in disease. For many, nutrition was treated as peripheral, “something dietitians handle,” rather than core physician knowledge. This is not a reflection on their ability or commitment. It reflects how medical education is structured.
Beyond Flexner: Why we must rethink medical training reform
Our current scheme and its overbearing credentialism is out of date and cannot keep up with a rapidly changing health care environment. Greater flexibility is needed for the well-being of patients and physicians alike. Professional burnout and anticipated physician shortages continue to be highly debated topics.
