Editor’s note: In honor of Ray Smythe I found out Ray Smythe died last week and though I consider him a close “work friend,” I never got to meet him in person. I edited Ray’s columns each month. Ray would send his monthly column, which he has been doing for over 20 years. We became email friends and would check in on each other from time to time – he was one of those people who knew how to connect, human to human, in an instant.

I was a teacher for 39 years. I had a student named Matthew who is now a 41-year-old man. He has stayed in contact with me since he was a 17-year-old student in my high school history class. Mathew always tells me that he could hardly wait to get to my class each day. Even if he didn’t feel well, he still didn’t want to miss my class. Why did he feel so committed to attending my class? I asked him this question recently during a phone call.

Visualize a large square in Berlin, Germany. As you walk through this square, you come upon a large square window that has been planted face down into the cobblestones. When you strain to look down into the window, you see empty bookshelves below. The bookshelves are about 10 feet high without any books on them. This is the monument commemorating the first book burnings in Nazi Germany in the 1933. Hitler and the Nazis started burning books that had been banned.
