"The fan, the true one, is almost always an engaged spectator": the World Cup as seen by Raymond Aron
I count myself among the hundreds of millions of viewers willing to stay up late into the night to watch, on the small screen, a match of the World Cup between the Federal Republic of Germany and Brazil. If I dare to offer a few observations about football fans, it is because I am one of them; a fan of rugby as much as of football, but rugby has never achieved worldwide popularity, not even in France. It barely crosses the Loire.
The Gulf Search for Power(s) / Politique étrangère, Vol. 90, No. 4, 2025
In Southeast Asia, the balance of influence tilts between China and the United States. Does the region’s broad spectrum of foreign policies signal flexibility and pragmatism, allowing these countries to capitalize on the Sino-American rivalry? Or does it instead reveal the underlying economic, social, and political contradictions of a space struggling to organize itself collectively?
Raymond Aron and the Complexity of Liberty
When someone who knows what he’s talking about, say Daniel J. Mahoney, the dean of American Aron scholars, talks about Raymond Aron (1905–1983), the elements and broad shape of the discussion are givens. The discussion starts with some version of a bold claim—frequently, that Aron was arguably the single best political analyst in the twentieth century—and then proceeds to back it up.
Raymond Aron's Final Lesson – Aurelian Craiutu
Though he understood that liberties are always incomplete, Aron still saw much good in the ongoing struggle to build free societies. Nothing prevents us from understanding, nothing obliges us to hate those whom we fight against. Raymond Aron In March 1968, Jean Monnet, the founding father of what is today known as the European Union, wrote to Raymond Aron to praise his passion, clarity, responsibility, and courage.

Liberty and Equality
In This Review In This Review In this new translation of Raymond Aron’s last university lecture, delivered in 1978, France’s most renowned Cold War–era liberal thinker grandly reflects on the concept of liberty in Western societies. The Geopolitics of Shaming: When Human Rights Pressure Works—and When It Backfires
In This Review In This Review The Geopolitics of Shaming: When Human Rights Pressure Works—and When It Backfires Human rights have grown in importance in world politics, but their enforcement remains notoriously erratic and selective. Terman breaks important ground in illuminating when, how, and under what conditions states engage in “naming and shaming” other countries to punish them for human rights transgressions.
Review of Claire Arcenas's America’s Philosopher: John Locke in American Intellectual Life
As soon as I started asking questions about Locke's legacy in America, however, I discovered something unexpected. The Locke I knew and thought I would find in the historical record was missin. He was nowhere to be found. And the text I thought defined Locke's relevance--his Two Treatises--was conspicuously absent as well. Between 1773 and 1917, it wasn't even published in an American edition.

France, Still the Third Republic
By Raymond Aron October 1, 1951 Wikipedia Commons THE middle-of-the-road parties, as they would be called in Anglo-Saxon countries, came out on top in the recent French elections, but the Pleven Cabinet formed after long delay does not provide the strong government we all had hoped for, since they are more badly divided among themselves than before.
