1 Background Neonatal mortality and morbidity are key indicators of perinatal health. Neonatal morbidity reflects early life health and aspects of perinatal care and is associated with longer-term childhood outcomes; therefore, monitoring morbidity complements surveillance focused on preterm birth, growth restriction and mortality [1, 2]. Despite global efforts to improve neonatal health, neonatal morbidity and neonatal death remain major public health concerns [3].
