Virtual Crime Book Club - Honouring Susie Steiner and Voting
Last night the virtual crime book club met to discuss Missing Presumed by the late Susie Steiner. The book was loved by the majority with over half of the group saying they will read the next book in the series. In fact, several members had already ordered it. Of particular note were Susie’s beautiful and evocative writing and the characterisation of Manon. How real Manon felt with her internet dating in today’s modern world. The crime writing world has clearly lost a great talent.
Our Distressing Level of Alcohol Deaths is Adding to Scotland’s Shame

Over 1,000 people have died through alcohol in every single year but one of the past twenty years – a devastating loss of life for Scotland’s families and communities. At Scottish Families we hear every day about distressing levels of alcohol-related risk and harm affecting whole families – children, young people, and adults.

Overdose Awareness Day 2021 - with thanks to Caroline
From Caroline Kevin was born on the 13th of December 1972 and he was just a lovely baby. There weren’t any problems to worry about and he continued to grow into a happy and contented toddler. At the age of 4, he entered nursery school and settled down enjoying the interaction with his friends. Around the age of 10, we started to notice that his behaviour was changing to more challenging and confrontational behaviour.

Rising Alcohol Deaths Reflect Lockdown Pressures on Families
The announcement today that a further 1,190 people in Scotland have died through alcohol-specific causes in 2020 reflects another year of heartbreak for families affected by alcohol harm. Sadly these figures come as little surprise to Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs, with our national Helpline trends around alcohol during the COVID pandemic showing an escalating picture of risk, harm and service failure.
Virtual Crime Book Club - This Month’s Book
Apologies that this post informing readers about the book club’s current read is late. I did send out the email. So if you’re a member of the book club, you should be aware of the book we’re reading. These posts tend to be for readers who haven’t yet quite decided to join and are still considering it. The theme for April is YA crime fiction. The book that won the vote is; A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson The case is closed. Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by Sal Singh.
Virtual Crime Book Club - What We’re Reading in March
The vote is in and the decision has been made. The book the Virtual Crime Book Club is reading for March is; Bluebird Bluebird by Attica Locke When it comes to law and order, East Texas plays by its own rules–a fact that Darren Mathews, a black Texas Ranger, knows all too well. Deeply ambivalent about growing up black in the lone star state, he was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could. Until duty called him home.
Virtual Crime Book Club - This Month’s Book
The vote has been completed and the book has overwhelmingly won this month. The book being read for February’s meeting is; The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman Four septuagenarians with a few tricks up their sleeves A female cop with her first big case A brutal murder Welcome to… The Thursday Murder Club In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves The Thursday Murder Club.
Virtual Crime Book Club - Video and Voting
Last night the virtual crime book club discussed The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly. Overall it was a well received book. There were discussions on the likability of the main character Mickey Haller and what this means to a story. If you want to watch the discussion you can view it below, but beware there are very definite spoilers within. So please don’t watch if you are planning on reading the book. Onto January’s book, the theme this month is UK set books.

End Of A Decade - Best Books
Not only is today the last day of the year, but it’s also the last day of the decade. Where did the 2010s go? Honestly, the older you get the faster time seems to pass you by. Anyway, less of me complaining about my age, and more about books shall we… Instead of a post about the best books I’ve read this year I thought I’d do a post about the best books I’d read this decade, so in no particular order these are the books I’ve loved this past ten years.
Happy Holidays and my Gift to You - A FREE Book!
I want to wish you happy holidays, however you celebrate them. I plan on eating too much, spending time with my family, my gorgeous two dogs, Alfie and Lola and sitting a relaxing with a couple of good books. It’s one of those times of the year, a bit like the summer holidays, where you can spend more time than usual reading, getting through a nice pile of books without worrying that you should be doing something else.
Recently Read - A Deathly Silence by Jane Isaac
I know it’s been quite a while since I blogged and I feel bad about that. I’m not really sure what happened. It started in the summer. I went away and the blog went by the wayside. I returned from holiday and was busy working and along with managing ill-health I never seemed to manage to fit in time to blog again. But, I did miss it. I missed talking to you. I missed writing that wasn’t novel writing. I’ve eventually pulled up the blog admin page, logged in and here we are.
What’s Your First Draft Like? - Peter Laws
I’m pleased to welcome Peter Laws to the blog to talk about his first draft process today. Peter Laws is an author, journalist, film critic and public speaker. He is the creator of the Matt Hunter novel series. The first of which, ‘Purged’, was released in February 2017. He’s an ordained Reverend in the UK Baptist denomination with a fascination for the macabre.
Interview With Publisher Karen Sullivan ~ Orenda
Today I am pleased to welcome Karen Sullivan to the blog. She is a very busy woman so it has taken a few weeks to get this together. But it has been worth the wait. I hope you agree. Hi Karen, thank you for coming on the blog to talk about books, crime fiction and publishing. For anyone who might not know who you are, can you tell us a little about yourself please? Thanks for having me, Rebecca! I’m Karen Sullivan, publisher and founder of Orenda Books.
Interview with Manhunt’s Colin Sutton
Today I’m thrilled to share an interview with Colin Sutton with you. In case you don’t recognise the name read on and let him introduce himself and I’m sure you will soon know who I have invited onto the blog. I feel very honoured that he accepted my invitation to do the interview. The answers to my questions are very insightful. I do hope you enjoy this as much as I did. Hi Colin, thank you for coming on to the blog to talk to me and my readers.
Top 10 Crime Festivals of 2019
In the past I have written my top 10 crime festival posts so I thought I would do so again this year as it has always been a popular post. I’m not sure if I can keep it down to 10 though as more and more festivals pop up every year. The world of crime fiction is getting ever more popular with festivals giving readers more and more choice every year. There are your large well-known festivals as usual and your smaller, but growing festivals. Let’s have a look at them here.

Cover Reveal and Blurb for KILL FOR ME
Yes, it has a title, a cover and a blurb! The fifth book in the DI Hannah Robbins series in nearly here and it is titled KILL FOR ME. I’m really excited about this book. It’s a little different from the others in the series but you will still recognise it as a Hannah book. The feedback from my editor has been really positive which made my week yesterday when I received it. You really don’t need to have read any of the other books in the series to read this one, it reads really well as a standalone.
My Writing Life ~ Finished First Draft
This is a catch-up post as I didn’t manage to write one last week due to a funeral, but the reality is, it is still only a week-long writing post because over the past week I have been struck down by the terrible cold virus that is doing the rounds and I have got nothing done for a week.
The Twisted Web - Sneak Peek!
I’m thrilled to announce that The Twisted Web is released into the wild today. Yes, you can pick up a copy for your Kindle right now. There will be a paperback and audiobook to follow, but today you can get the ebook. When the body of a man is left in the city centre set up as a realistic police crime scene, DI Hannah Robbins is forced to enter a world that can break a person, a case and a reputation.
Can You Sell Books via Social Media?
This is the age-old question that has haunted authors and publishers for decades – for as long as social media has been around anyway. Can social media sell books? My personal opinion has always been that it can, but that it depends on what you mean by selling books and how you propose to do it. Of course the tweets that shout out “buy my book” are never going to work. Especially when it is repeated on a loop with no other content coming out from that account.
Writing Crime - The Offence of Murder
We have looked at a lot policing policies, rules and procedures, but what we have not looked at are the actual offences for which you can and will be locking your bad guys up for in your crime fiction. The offences that you need to know to be able to have grounds for arrest and to even be able to interview them and have the outcome you want if you want to be able to charge them at the end. Because, it’s not enough to just say they did it.
The 3 Books of Alison Morton
Today I am pleased to welcome Alison Morton to the blog to talk about her three books. Alison writes the acclaimed Roma Nova thriller series featuring modern Praetorian heroines. Cover Reveal For DI Hannah Robbins 3!
It’s that time where I show you the cover for DI Hannah Robbins 3. And give you the title so I can stop calling it DI Hannah Robbins 3! So, without further ado, here it is. 24 hours after he walked away from court a free man, cop killer and gang leader Simon Talbot is found murdered. In his possession; the name of a protected witness from his trial. For DI Hannah Robbins, it’s a race against time to find Talbot’s killer, and locate the bystander before it’s too late.
My Top 10 Podcasts For Writers
This is a new (short) series, listing podcasts that I think are worth a listen. I am an avid podcast listener as well as audiobook fan. When I’m struggling with pain, and work, and reading from books is hard, the audio format is a life saver. And it is because of this I have found some fabulous podcasts that I will now share. Today the podcasts are a good listen if you are a writer. Next week I will list great podcasts for readers.
Get Your Facts Right - in Fiction
Think that being a fiction writer excuses you from getting your facts as accurate as a non-fiction author? Think again! You owe it to your readers to check any facts you’re not sure of, especially if you’re writing about a setting or situation of which you do not have first-hand experience. Brtish indie author Rebecca Bradley has a natural advantage for her chosen genre of crime fiction: she is a former police detective, so is super-sensitive to factual errors in police procedurals in particular.
Sen. Johnson only wants to have his say on Nourse nomination
A Journal Sentinel editorial on July 20 criticized Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) for not rubber-stamping the nomination of Victoria Nourse for a seat on the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. The editorial cites a letter from 53 law professors (only eight of whom teach in Wisconsin) critical of Johnson. While law professors would write on behalf of a fellow academic, the letter suffers from a fundamental misapprehension of the facts.
Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe
Not another dadgummed shirt kerfuffle. A couple years ago, it was scientist Matt Taylor’s allegedly misogynistic pictorial fashion choice. This week, it’s a deeply racist Walking Dead t-shirt, featuring a picture of Lucille the Baseball Bat in all her barbed-wire-wrapped glory, with the shocking text eeny meeny miny moe.
Made To Be Broken - Available For Pre-Order!
I now have a release date for Made to be Broken. Yes, in less than 4 weeks time, DI Hannah Robbins and team will be entering the world again. It’s a scary period for a writer, waiting for the readers verdict on a new book, but early reader feedback has been really positive, so I’m holding the nerves in and getting on with things. There will be giveaways and a Facebook launch party on the day (once I set it up!) if anyone wants to pop by and say hello.
'It is my duty to apply the law as it is written'
Twenty years ago I earned my law degree from the University of Wisconsin. I practiced law for 16 years, as a civil litigator, business transactional attorney, and an arbitrator. I was vice president of legal operations for an international software company headquartered in Wisconsin. I am a lifelong Wisconsinite, and my roots are firmly planted here. I spent my career as a lawyer representing great Wisconsin people and businesses.
Rebecca Bradley, JoAnne Kloppenburg advance in Supreme Court race
The two defeated Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Joe Donald in a race that ended up being closer than some Democratic observers expected. Last week, Donald campaign manager Andy Suchorski said he expected Bradley to receive 55 percent to 60 percent of the vote. "I'm really excited and I'm really glad to see that my message has apparently really resonated with the voters," said Bradley, who received 45 percent of the vote with 98 percent of precincts reporting.
Dark Cotton Wool
Today I want to talk about the lack of posts on the blog this year, so far. And my lack of interaction on social media as a whole. The reason I want to bring it up is I’m probably not alone and I think sharing it and identifying with others might just help someone else know they’re not on their own with it. I threw myself into the Christmas festivities at home (in the run-up to, and during) and it had a knock on effect for my health.
Recently Read - Can Anybody Help Me by Sinéad Crowley
Can Anybody Help Me by Sinéad Crowley It was crazy really, she had never met the woman, had no idea of her real name but she thought of her as a friend. Or, at least, the closest thing she had to a friend in Dublin. Struggling with a new baby, Yvonne turns to netmammy, an online forum for mothers, for support. Drawn into a world of new friends, she spends increasing amounts of time online and volunteers more and more information about herself.
Connie St Louis: Delusional or Dishonest?
Well, the dust has settled, and the internet’s fickle attention has shifted away from June’s flavour-of-the-month hot news item: the shaming of Nobel-laureate scientist Sir Tim Hunt.
Social Justice: A Millenarian Movement
Popular culture loves an apocalypse, with special fondness these days for zombies, pandemics, and zombie pandemics. (The 2012 thing is so over.) There is another style of apocalypse, however, the good old-fashioned millenarian kind that is usually associated with cults and fundies, but which comes in some surprising forms. And some of these forms, unfortunately, are current, widespread, and scarily influential.
Clean Reader - Clean Crime?
There’s been a lot of furore recently about the new app that is about – Clean Reader. It gives the reader of an electronic book the ability to change words they don’t like, into less “offensive” words. There are three levels to Clean Reader. Clean, Really clean and Squeaky clean. Clean basically blocks out the F word and you move on up from there depending on your level of word offence or who you are giving the book to read – children is the example.
What’s Your First Draft Like? - Sinead Crowley
Today we are taking a look at crime writer Sinead Crowley’s first draft process and not only are we talking about her process, but there is a bonus at the end, so make sure you keep reading! Sinéad is Arts and Media Correspondent with RTE News in Ireland, working for TV, radio and the web. She wrote her first novel, ‘Can Anybody Help Me’ while she was on maternity leave with her first child.
Shallow Waters Released Into The World
Today’s the day. Shallow Waters is live and available to the unsuspecting public. Or if you read this blog, those who should be very suspicious… Shallow Waters When the naked, battered body of an unidentified teenager is found dumped in an alleyway, post-mortem finds evidence of a harrowing series of events. Another teenage death with the same MO pushes DI Hannah Robbins and her team on the Nottingham City division Major Crimes Unit, to their limits, and across county borders.
