Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I used to review books for the Placer County Museums Division Docent Digest.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

It makes it much more difficult for the legacy outlets to control the narrative, which is a positive thing.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Macauley Connor in "The Philadelphia Story."

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It's like being a troubadour except that your words aren't set to music.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I don't really follow hashtags.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

I really don't have a preference.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

WordPress and Substack's publishing platforms

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram, but I like X, too.

Who do you wish followed you?

Sean Fitzgerald.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I love to write and I have lots of questions.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, they didn't want me. I had too many ideas.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

"The Time My Dad Ate Chinese Food With Cary Grant." is my favorite story I've done this year.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

If you're where you're supposed to be, your work won't feel like work.

When's the best time to pitch you?

It doesn't matter.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

To write a guest editorial for the Auburn Journal.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Haven't gotten a bad one yet.

What's your favorite drink?

Iced tea, but I mostly drink water.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In the kitchen or reading. Sleeping is fun, too.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

TwitchyTeam and whatever my fellow bloggers are up to at the moment.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That critics are predisposed to hate everything.
