What is a Teaching Postdoc? — MATH VALUES
By Aram Bingham & Rebecca Swanson According to the , 68% of faculty members in the US are not on the tenure track. Many of the remaining 32% are in teaching-focused tenure-track positions. Having a strong instructional resume can help recent graduates obtain desirable teaching-oriented faculty positions. One way for a newly-minted PhD to improve their classroom instruction and build experience is to seek a Teaching Postdoc Fellow (TPF) position.

Building Relationships with Industry for Student Groups — MATH VALUES
Many of us in mathematics advise student groups at our institutions. The two of us founded the Society for Women in Mathematics (SWiM) at the Colorado School of Mines in 2013 with the goal of building a community of support for women and other underrepresented groups in mathematics. What we weren’t expecting was that this simple community would end up building such mutually beneficial connections with industry. SWiM has grown significantly over the years.
Melatonin in Health and Disease: A Perspective for Livestock Production
1. Introduction, Photoperiod, and Synthesis Pathway Following the discovery of melatonin in 1958 [1], most research efforts focused on understanding the role of melatonin in the reproductive physiology of photosensitive seasonal breeding animals [2,3,4]. Melatonin is known to be elevated at nighttime, which is considered a highly conserved trait among vertebrate animals playing a significant role in circadian rhythms and seasonality of reproduction.
What You Can Do to Support VITAL Faculty — MATH VALUES
After two years in a tenure track position at a small liberal arts college, I moved into a VITAL* faculty position at the Colorado School of Mines, where I have been a Teaching Professor since 2012. While there are many aspects of my job that I love, I have experienced and heard stories from other VITAL faculty members about situations that made them feel “less than,” unwelcome, or unvalued at their institutions.

The scents of our grief
In the months leading up to the family dog's death, she becomes my obsession, my ritual. There are others, of course, but hers fill my days and my space more than any other. Each night, before I head up to bed and leave her in the care of my husband (she is too old for stairs and he is a night owl), I kiss her in patterns. Three on her head, three on the scruff of her neck, three on her belly. Then I inhale her scent, deep, from the warm spot on her torso.
My kids forgot how to play
Photo: iStockphoto It’s a typical Saturday in February in Colorado. The temperature hit 60, erasing all evidence of a midweek snowstorm, and I have nudged my children out the back door after a restless morning of arguing and whining. The three-year-old squints against the bright light after leaving the dim comfort of his house cave. The seven-year-old shivers, despite wearing a warm hoodie and slippers and having the intense winter sun on his cheeks. “I’m bored,” the big one says.
How to Write About Your Disability | The Rumpus.net
How to Write About Your Disability Make someone cry. Show how mighty you are, because your disability has made you so. The more people you make cry, and the harder you make them cry, the mightier you are. The mightier you are, the more people will want to read and share your story. No one wants to read about you if you aren’t mighty. The way to make someone cry (and thus attain true might) is to include the rawest, most painful details about your disability. The more details you share, the better.
No, My Husband Is Not My "Best Friend"
I dated a close friend once. We saw the world through the same lenses — literally. We were budding photographers, who loved to travel and make photo journals of our adventures together. We told the exact same jokes. We rarely argued. We spent a lot of time mucking around doing absolutely nothing. A perfect match, one might think. We eased into dating after months of being in the friend zone. It was simple. Until it wasn't.
Why I Stopped Being So Nice All the Time
I grew up in Minnesota. We ate peppermint bon-bon ice cream instead of mint chocolate chip. We played Duck, Duck, Gray Duck instead of Duck, Duck, Goose.
How My Period Has Defined My Life
I wear my favorite corduroy bell bottom pants with the red apples. My brother has tube top socks with red stripes. We are the same, except he is told to play with toy guns and I am told to play with dolls. No matter; we carefully tie both the doll and a GI Joe to our gender-neutral Fisher Price pontoon boat and shove it off the beach. I shoot at the floating boat with the cap gun, bang, bang, bang, while my brother lights fireworks and attaches them to the back of dead frogs.

IVF And The Embryo That Remains
It’s the embryo in the room, the one we rarely talk about. It’s been almost four years since I did my last and final embryo transfer, resulting in our second (and final) beautiful boy. I was 36 the first time I did IVF, and a few weeks shy of 41 when I gave birth to baby number two. My husband and I had already agreed to stop at two children, and a grueling and painful pregnancy and labor sealed the deal. The first time the bill came, my husband paid the storage fee without discussion.
