The 38 books I read in 2023
I don’t keep a journal in any regular sense of the word, but the joy of writing this list every year is how I travel with these books back to wherever I was (mentally, physically) when reading them. This year, it seemed to show me that I was attempting to push myself out of my comfort zone, with varying degrees of success. Maybe it’s a coming-out-of-the-pandemic thing (there were a bunch of books that had that as a theme), but exploration felt like it was key.
The 33 books I read in 2022
It's the end of what's felt like both a very long year and a "what the heck, how is it 2023?!?" span of time. This was the year that I read fewer books than any year in recent memory, the year that I (like every other 40+ woman over the course of the pandemic) got into romance novels and the year that I made the mistake of sticking with some books I knew weren't for me, in the hopes that they'd improve.
The 47 books I read in 2021
Happy brink of 2022, all! It’s been quite the year. A tough one societally, a tough one personally, another year that saw us finding more rope when we think we’ve reached the end of ours. But if you, like me, have been watching the TV version of “Station Eleven” (one of my favourite books of 2015), you’ve hopefully been reminded that things during a pandemic could be much, much worse — and that art matters in a crisis as much (if not more than) as at any other time.
