Contact folks working at places that interest you. You won't hear back from everyone, but maybe some. Read their work and ask them questions

When's the best time to pitch you?

Weekdays. I'm usually responding to email during the day.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

At a concert or spending time with my wife, daughter, and dog.
