By Rei Wolfsohn Four East Meadow junior firefighters were awarded the Finkelman Family Fund Scholarship at the East Meadow Fire Department’s headquarters on June 1. Giuliano D’Alessandro, 18, Joseph McLoughlin, 18, Garrett Wanser, 17, and Nicholas Brent, 17, received the award before a room full of firefighters from Jody Ratner, daughter of Nelson H. and Gloria Finkelman and sister of Michael Finkelman.

Police officer, K-9 honored by East Meadow American Legion

By Rei Wolfsohn Nassau County Police Officer Rory Kerley and his K-9 partner, Shammy, were honored by East Meadow American Legion Post 1082 on April 10, for tracking down a drunk driving suspect in the fatal hit-and-run death of Daniel Bliss last October. Bliss, 63, a North Bellmore resident and an East Meadow Sons of the American Legion member, was struck while riding a motorcycle on North Jerusalem Road, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Freeport Police Boxing Club raise funds to knock out cancer

By Rei Wolfsohn Professional and amateur boxers jumped in the ring on Saturday, Mar. 7, for the Freeport Police Athletic League’s (PAL) Ring Masters Championship, an event which raised $5,000 for two lifelong Freeport residents, Mitchell Kraeling and Tom Courtenay, both of whom are fighting cancer. All the event’s funds will go directly towards Kraeling’s and Courtenay’s treatments.
