Reimagining Africa’s place

In the shifting spiritual landscape of late antique Egypt, between the 5th and 7th centuries, the boundaries between prayer, medicine, and what we call “magic” were fluid, porous, and deeply personal. Communities across the Nile Valley navigated illness, desire, and divine presence with materials ranging from holy oil to amulets, biblical quotations to planetary invocations.

What happens when an object attributed to one cultural center actually belongs to another? What stories are lost or misinterpreted when assumptions about artistic influence go unchallenged? A 5th-century wooden chest inlaid with ivory, excavated from an elite burial in the archaeological cemetery in Qustul in Nubia (an ancient region in what is today Southern Egypt and Northern Sudan), compels us to revisit these questions.

This late antique Egyptian textile, depicting mounted riders, winged women, and various motifs of prosperity, provides a glimpse into the multiculturalism and complex social structures of the Mediterranean world. Discovered in an Egyptian cemetery, its preservation is largely due to Egypt’s dry climate.
