Single‐egg comet assay: A protocol to quantify DNA damage in natural bioarchives

1 INTRODUCTION The comet assay (CA), developed as a toxicological test for human cells, can assess DNA damage in low cell numbers (Collins et al., 2023; Ostling & Johanson, 1984). The CA is an OECD endorsed method for measuring genotoxicity of compounds (OECD, 2016) which, by inducing strand breaks at sites of damage such as alkali-labile sites and abasic sites, can accurately quantify both single and double strand DNA damage (Calini et al., 2002).
