The Divine Creative
We are all familiar with the very first words recorded in the book of Genesis:, “In the beginning…God created.” From the very first moments of existence, Divine creativity was at work, and we are the products of that divine imagination. But more than that, as Divinely created beings we are endowed with creativity and this means that we are designed to carry on the creative abilities of our Creator.
Notes From A Sermon: James 1:17-27
Notes From a Sermon: James 1:17-27 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first-fruits of all he created . . . Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

Sculpting the Divine: Exploring Religious Statues and Sculptures - Invaluable
Throughout history humanity has been fascinated with manifesting the divine in sculptural form to both pay homage to godly figures and to pass down the traditions, rituals, and narratives across different religious faiths. Though these vessels of the spiritual community are tailored to different faiths, they frequently share elemental aspects that speak to some of the universal intersections between art and religion.
Fear Is The Mind Killer: Spiritual Insights From Dune

There are many who are coming to the book for the first time thanks to this new theatrical iteration. They will now be able to delve deeply into the rich narrative that Herbert created and learn even more about the fascinating universe in which the story is set.

Introduction to Pennsylvania Folk Magic The enchanting world of Pennsylvania Dutch culture has often gone unnoticed by many, preserved by the German community, and therefore few outsiders have truly had the opportunity to experience it. The Pennsylvania Dutch are Germanic-speaking people who immigrated to the New World in the 17th century, bringing with them diverse backgrounds and cultures from Switzerland, Germany, and Austria-Hungary.
The Story Behind Creating Struggle And Redemption
Last month, I achieved my goal of becoming an author by releasing my first book Struggle and Redemption. This book comes from the reality of being a spoken-word artist who does not prioritize being on stage. I will explain why I avoid the spotlight in a little while. However, I understand God has given me a gift I must use for his glory. What better way to glorify God than by compiling my spoken word pieces and poems into a story for the world to read? Why Struggle and Redemption?
The Healing Power Of Poetry
Even though I’ve never considered myself a poet, I recently decided to take a class on writing poetry. My eyes were opened to a world of writing that wasn’t about rhyming or alliteration, but more about connecting to both the inner and outer worlds. Poetry has long been revered for its ability to nourish the soul and promote healing on many levels. This was new to me.
History Of Satanism Reveals Itself At The Satanic Temple
April 27th 2024 Psalm 34:4 – I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Last weekend I had the pleasure of embarking on a day trip to Salem, MA, accompanied by a friend. As I had never been to Salem before, so she served as my knowledgeable guide throughout the trip. Over the last four months, I have been dedicating my time and energy to extensively research and write about the highly controversial topic of the Satanic Temple helping women access abortion medication.
Remembering Michael Knott: The Family Man In Black
Michael Gerard Knott passed away on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. I can’t say we were close, but I considered him a friend. I first discovered his music when I was in college, but after graduation I found myself in Southern California working for Diamante Music Group in Newport Beach. At my very first sales conference, Michael Knott walked in, dressed in black, and carrying a worn out acoustic guitar. He put one knee up on a chair and he played the song “Deaf and Dumb” for all of us.
The Poetry Of Jesus In ‘The Rich Man And Lazarus’
For centuries, scholars have debated whether Jesus’ story of the Rich Man and Lazarus is a parable or an account of a true, historical narrative. Thankfully, regardless of whichever side of the fence one falls on, it doesn’t change the clarity or the message of the story. Both hermeneutical approaches yield clear warnings about the eternal consequences of sin and the hope we have in the gospel, as preserved in Holy Scripture.
Holy Sonnets 14 Through 20
XIV We have strong joy because His joy is stronger And more robust, fuller, heartier than all those Little firework-squibs and faint sparklers – those Sporadic spurts of celebration we manage to find in Our seas of steadfast gray. Out of the ennui endlessly Lulling comes on occasion the lighthouse-beam Needling a line of light through the night, the un- Ending night of the long march.
Holy Sonnets 9 Through 13 Contemporary Christian Poetry
IX If humanity is the renegade rag-girl in the tale Of all history, then the prescient Prince has always Loved her through all ages, as she picked through Bones and ash and assorted litter, looking for Gems or even just pennies in the trash. He had Always known and loved her, from the beginning Or before, convinced always of how he would Rescue her, not just giving up his diadem and wealth, But taking on agony and shame as well.
Holy Sonnets I through III
I How much terror he must have overcome To climb the tree where Hell awaited him — Facing lavaflows of fury both holy and hot. All the rage of outraged love, hurt to the point Of delirium and derangement, awaited him. Every mother’s cry for wild-eyed justice After a daughter’s defilement, would attack him: The scapegoat, the defendant, the whipping boy Who loved the miscreant little master who Deserved the whip, but willingly took his place.
I Am. Your Are.
I Am. You Are.
The Jesus of Christmas Present
Much will be said this Christmas about whether or not there was an actual inn or if He was born in the home of a relative. We’ll speculate about the star the Magi followed; was it a super nova? We’ll even wonder if the choir of angels was a unique alignment of the planets or winged beings hovering in a night sky. We might question whether or not Jesus was born on December 25th or if it is actually a Pagan holiday. I attempt to sort these things out in Unwrapping the First Christmas.

Falling Flower: a Simple Memorial Ritual
(Today’s article is by guest writer Tony Wolf. For a brief bio, see below.) Oh, that sweet fragrance of falling petals…. With kind words, it is ended. Farewell. The time to go is now. – Lee Hyong-Ki [1963] It may be that – during times of grief – the people who would most benefit from symbolic ritual are those who are least likely to partake in it.
Spiritual Naturalist Society Call for Writers & Artists
The Spiritual Naturalist community is looking to hear from new voices and artists. Our website (snsociety.org) features weekly articles from contributing and guest writers. These articles focus on some aspects of the broad range of topics that comprise spiritual naturalism. SNS currently has openings for some new writers, both those who to submit an occasional piece and those who would like to write regularly. You don’t have to be an accomplished writer or a scholar to contribute.
Oh Smell and See That the Lord is Good
At first there will be so much else happening you will not notice it is missing. Then you will puzzle over the odd taste of a muffin, the strange lack of clean smells in the shower. Then it will be gone like a wall between you and the world. Is the house on fire? Is someone brewing coffee? Are you wearing deodorant? You cannot tell. It is perhaps the subtlest sense to lose. My grandparents’ house smelled like grapefruit. Coffee shops smell like nostalgia and home and laptops and delight.
5 Non-Traditional Tarot Decks
One of the first things I bought when I started my magical journey was a deck of Tarot cards. The friend who introduced me to Wicca recommended the Robin Wood Tarot – it was a good recommendation. Robin Wood follows the structure and themes of the more popular Waite-Smith deck very closely, but it replaces all the Christian and Jewish imagery with modern Pagan images and concepts. It worked very well for me. It worked so well that Robin Wood was my only deck for 13 years.
Resurrection in John
While It Was Still Dark In simple words, John gives us an important observation about the morning of the resurrection. “…It was still dark…” As always with John the words operate on two levels. Yes, it was before dawn so it was dark. John, however, was not referring to the limited number of lumens peering over the horizon. The time of day is only a servant to his greater point. The world was dark not because the sun had yet to peer over the horizon. John is not trying to describe the ordinary.
The Curious Case of Tom Bombadil
“Fair lady!” said Frodo again after a while. “Tell me, if my asking does not seem foolish, who is Tom Bombadil?” “He is,” said Goldberry, staying her swift movements and smiling. Frodo looked at her questioningly. “He is, as you have seen him,” she said in answer to his look. “He is the Master of wood, water, and hill.” There have been many theories, some better than others, as to who—or rather, what—Tom Bombadil is.
A Walk Along the Way of Inclusion and Affirmation
Inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy “As I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray to the Lord my soul to take.” I dreamt I died… My vision slowly cleared to reveal – a road. Over the road, a sign read: I AM THE WAY TO PERDITION. I AM THE WAY OF SELF LOVE ABOVE ALL OTHERS. ALL ARE INCLUDED UPON THIS ROAD. ALL ARE AFFIRMED FOR WHO THEY ARE. ON THIS ROAD, ALL FIND THEIR TRUE SELVES. ABANDON ALL JUDGEMENT, YE WHO WALK HERE.
Review: A Journey through the Word on Fire Bible
The Word on Fire Bible, a remarkable literary achievement, now in its third volume, has impressed me as a great contribution to the illumination of sacred scripture in our world. As a biblical scholar myself, I have encountered countless resources that tend to lean heavily towards either historical context or personal spirituality.
Foolish Brutes and Brutish Fools
After absorbing Federico Fellini’s La Strada (1954) I didn’t say much for a few hours. I was tired and sweaty and had to run to catch a train; my wife was also tired, sweaty, and had to catch a train. But the exhausting rush home provided a fitting backdrop for the dark-matter pit brewing in my gut. Fellini’s film left me with what might otherwise seem opposite feelings: sympathy for the world and everyone in it and a sense of profound, unabating despair.
All About The Chosen Podcast and Links
It is a cool, bright morning here in the Northeast and so, once again, we’ve gathered our dogs and done the usual podcast about whatever we’re thinking about right now, which this week was The Chosen. We work through Dallas Jenkins’ explanation for why the tiny pride flag spotted on set is no big deal. We have a hard time thinking of the words (at least I do) and wonder together about whether we will watch Season Four when it comes out.
Are Lucifer and Satan the Same?
For six seasons, TV fans enjoyed the guilty pleasure of rooting for the good-looking, affable detective hero of the hit show “Lucifer.” Why guilty? Because the hero, Lucifer Morningstar, was actually the devil, that powerful angel tossed from heaven because—according to show notes—he was bored of being Lord of Hell. Friends talking about the show would joke, “It feels a little weird rooting for the devil!” Why Lucifer? TV Lucifer is cleverly named. Writers seem to have consulted the Bible.
The Light: A Poem By Karah Balew
I don’t know how to pray anymore. It’s part of my heart that’s hurting and sore. I whisper out lines beginning with “Lord” And soon find it’s something my heart can’t afford. I’m tired of trying to make sense of things, Of crying and fighting for new beginnings. I’m sick of the beat from the tumultuous tide That constantly tears at my withered pride. But I’m taking the risks that I’ve never tried, Hoping there’s life on the other side.
Whimsical Watercolor Art Glories in God’s World
Animals. Birds. Insects. Trees. Flowers. Childhood. Family. Melinda Whitten’s art will make you smile—and gasp. One of my desires for this blog site was that it include art of many kinds—poetic, wise, visual, audible, and more. I tend to focus on writing and books since that’s what I know best, but music and visual arts feed my soul, too.
Mount Athos 1,000 Years of Unending Prayer
For as long as humanity has possessed a connection to the spiritual, there have been those who have dedicated themselves to silent meditation and prayer. Christianity itself has a rich history of men and women who chose to give their lives to God through monastic life. Some live in large groups, while others, like the Desert Fathers, isolate themselves from all human interaction. It can be hard to imagine someone living a monastic life in the modern world.
CS Lewis, Dallas Jenkins, Andy Stanley Podcast and Links
It is a bright, crisp day here in Bing and we’ve done a moderately lengthed podcast about why we think it’s okay to watch The Chosen, and what we like about it and don’t like about it. We manage to say a lot about Andy Stanley as well, and I work really hard to mention KduMez as usual. But we forgot to read the Passion Bible again. Hard to get back into a routine. Hope it’s all you could expect it to be. I don’t have a lot of links this week. Was super busy as usual.
