CultureVulture Homeroom (2021) - CultureVulture
It’s the beginning of the 2020 school year, and the senior class of Oakland (California) High School is ready to roll. But who could have predicted the Coronavirus? Who could have predicted George Floyd? One’s first impression of the class of 2020, as seen in Peter Nick’s Homeroom, is of a (mostly minority) group of teens, more focused on their hairstyles and phones than on what’s going on in class (there’s no actual homeroom shown, by the way).
San Francisco Jewish Film Festival 2021 - CultureVulture
It’s back: the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, the oldest and still the largest festival of its kind, has returned after last year’s pandemic-related hiatus. Well, let’s modify that: it’s back with caveats. Only one day, July 25th, will see actual live screenings, in the festival’s usual San Francisco site, the magnificent Castro Theater. With, of course, safety regulations to prevent the spread of Covid. The rest of the program, like school classes and many jobs, will be online.
Levi Strauss: A History of American Style
Aw shoot! I forgot to wear my new tight-fitting black Levi’s to the Levi’s show! But then, I was so surrounded by Levi’s history, paraphernalia, photographs, pants, and all things Levi’s that it didn’t really matter. The show takes place at San Francisco’s Contemporary Jewish Museum, and it’ll be there through August 9th.

San Francisco Jewish Film Festival 2019
If it’s July, it must be the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival—the 39th edition this year. And as always, the festival promises a wide array of feature films, documentaries, shorts, director appearances, and discussions–not only in San Francisco but also in Albany, Piedmont, Palo Alto, and San Rafael. The combined dates are July 18th to August 4th, for a total of 135 screenings.
San Francisco Silent Film Festival 2019
This year’s San Francsico Silent Film Festival starts and ends with film icon Buster Keaton’s films: “The Cameraman” on May 1st, opening night; and “Our Hospitality” on May 5th, closing night. The festival, you might have noticed, comes earlier than usual—it formerly took place in July, then June, now beginning of May.
San Francisco Jewish Film Festival 2018
With 67 films from 23 countries, this year’s San Francisco Jewish Film Festival–the 38th–remains the world’s largest, and, of course, still the oldest. And, by the way, 53% of the films are directed by women.
San Francisco Silent Film Festival 2018
It started in 1996 with three silent films in one day; this year, the now almost-venerable festival will present twenty-three programs over five days (one more day than last year), May 30th to June 3rd. As always, the festival will take place at San Francisco’s magnificent Castro Theater, where the ticket lines will start early, with some fans dressed in twenties attire. It’s always a scene at the Castro on festival days.
Berlin and Beyond Film Festival, San Francisco
By now, Bay Area folks might be feeling the urge for a film festival: the San Francisco International fest doesn’t come till April, and for the Silent Film Festival and Jewish Film Festival–to name just a few of our area’s multiple movie showcases–you’ll have to wait until summer. Don’t despair: the Berlin & Beyond Film Festival, screening at the Castro Theater, Berkeley’s Shattuck (one day only), and San Francisco’s Goethe-Institut is in sight, specifically February 9th to 15th.
San Francisco Jewish Film Festival 2017
When I wrote an article on Jewish film festivals for Hadassah magazine 14 years ago, the San Francisco Jewish film festival was the oldest and the largest anywhere. Of course it’s still the oldest; and–guess what?–it’s still the largest. So, welcome to the 37th annual edition, to be held at San Francisco’s Castro Theater and elsewhere in the Bay Area from July 20th to August 6th.
Letters from Baghdad (2016)
Everybody has heard of T. E. Lawrence–“Lawrence of Arabia”–adventurer, explorer, expert on what’s now called the Middle East. Certainly every movie-goer has seen Peter O’Toole in flowing white robes, riding through the wide-angle desert with his coterie of Arab horsemen. Far fewer people have heard of Gertrude Bell (1868-1926), an Englishwoman who did much of what Lawrence did.
San Francisco Silent Film Festival
Father’s Day, wedding day, graduation–all important June occasions. And, of course, the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, June 1st to 4th. This year, as in the 21 preceding years, the festival will feature a wide selection of films from the teens through the twenties of the last century. This year’s films come from Poland, the UK, Italy, the USSR, Japan, Sweden, and, of course, the United States.
Keeping House: Sniffle, sniffle - hankies stir up nostalgia
Dainty handkerchiefs have nothing on exuberant styles of those from the 1950s In an ancient joke, a psychiatrist asks a little old lady why her children have sent her to him. "Because I like pancakes," she replies. "Pancakes?" says the astonished shrink. "I like pancakes, too." "Oh, goody!" exclaims the little old lady. "You'll have to come visit me. I have three trunks full!" It was a little bit like that when I went to see my late friend Helen Gustafson's hankie collection.
