Photocopies and the meaning of life
“So, René, what is the meaning of life?” I looked at Roberto, lifting my eyes from the photocopying machines. It was our first year of business school, and Roberto and I were working on a joint project for our industrial production and processes class. By then he knew I was a Christian but, being a shy Asian-Brazilian student, he did not confront me head on, but chose this unprepared moment, when we were photocopying articles together, to come with the loaded question.
When Christians bless each other
On June 21st, I preached my farewell sermon as the Founding Pastor of Hopera, the church I planted in Rome, Italy in 2012. At the end of the service, the congregation sang a benediction blessing our family. Something profound happened at that moment. We were all in tears. God’s presence was palpable. It was one of the most spiritual experiences I have ever had in my life. During our pastoral succession process, benedictions often seemed to jump off the pages of my Bible.

Four Christian practices to care for your mental health
In my previous articles in a series on faith and mental health, I acknowledged that Christians may not only suffer in this area, but may also fall victim to religious stigma that fails to welcome them with compassion. But that is not biblical faith! From the Book of Job to the Psalms and the emotional suffering of its greatest leaders, Scripture shows that Christians carry the treasure of the Gospel in jars of clay.
Mental health: From religious stigma to Jesus’ compassion
In my previous article, I explained that Christians are not exempt from suffering, including in the area of mental health. We can have compassion for those fighting inner battles and welcome them into our churches with love. Unfortunately, ignorance, stigma and fear still surround the topic of mental health. It is difficult to admit the existence of challenges we wish did not exist, especially when they affect how we think and perceive the world.
Can Christians suffer from mental health issues?
Of course we can! We are human beings too! After all, we carry the treasure of the Gospel in jars of clay (2 Corinthians 4:7). We are saved by the grace of Christ, not by our own merit or because we are better or healthier than other people (Ephesians 2:8–10). All Evangelical Focus news and opinion, on your WhatsApp. And the Bible is not afraid to show the anguish of many of its leaders.
Blessings and battles of the Christian life
Does the Christian life include blessings? You bet! Grace, love, hope, peace, joy – it’s hard to count. But let’s be honest: the Christian life also includes suffering, doesn’t it? We are sinners saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8-10). We carry the treasure of the Gospel in jars of clay (2 Corinthians 4:7). Recognising these two realities is essential. At the start of our spiritual walk, we are so captivated by God’s goodness that we feel like tasting heaven on earth.
A God of the journey, not just the destination
We are often so focused on our desired destinations in life that we miss the journey along the way. But our God isn’t just a God of arrivals and happy endings. He is interested in all the chapters of our lives. The story of Jacob teaches us that anonymous places along our journey can become sites of surprising meaning. When we find him in Genesis 28, he is running from this family of origin and moving to Haran, where he hopes to find a wife and start a family of his own.
James M. Houston dies at 103
I love celebrating a well-lived life. James M. Houston passed on to the Lord on March 15th at age 103. He had a profound influence upon a generation of Christians through his writings, speaking, and the major institution he founded: Regent College. Traditionally seminaries train future pastors and church leaders, but Houston wanted to bring together Christians from all kinds of vocations to develop a Christ-centered view of all of life. My faith grew deep and wide there.

Hopera Church in Rome starts pastoral transition
When my family and I arrived in Rome in 2010, I couldn’t foresee every moment my dream of starting a new church there would bring. Almost 16 years later, I can recall countless memories of worship, prayer, friendships, baptisms, weddings, retreats, outreaches, Bible studies and so much love and joy. But life is made of cycles, and in the past two years I realized the time had come to prepare our church to a new chapter.
Spiritual formation should include counter-formation
How can leaders help their ministries discern the ways the world shapes us? One helpful perspective is to conceive spiritual formation as a process that includes counter-formation. From the sons of Issachar “who understood the times” to David’s service of “God’s purpose in his own generation” and Paul’s study of Athens’ idols, the Bible affirms leaders who exegete not just Scripture, but also their mission fields, with a desire to act as a bridge between them.

Three things you could you say to a friend who is not interested in faith
How can you spark engaging conversations with these friends and neighbours? Here are three possible entryways. Everybody believes The first way is to point out that it’s impossible not to believe. Even the proposition “better not to believe in anything because it will lead to difference and conflict” is a statement of faith. It presupposes, for example, that God doesn’t exist or that it isn’t essential to know Him. In other words, we all hold certain beliefs that we consider essential and true.
If God exists, why doesn't He eliminate suffering?
Stay up to date with Christian news in Europe? Sign up for CNE's newsletter. In my previous article, I considered the problem of evil from a secular point of view. Many sceptics claim that the existence of evil is proof of the non-existence of God, but without faith in God, we have no basis for considering evil "evil." Evil is an enigma for believers and non-believers alike. But how should believers look at the problem of pain?
Four ways a Christian should look at suffering
If God suffers for us, suffering acquires meaning At the heart of the Christian faith lies God’s encounter with evil and suffering. On the cross, Jesus didn’t ignore human sinfulness, but chose to confront it face-to-face to such an extent that Christian redemption is built upon a great tragedy.
Why people still struggle with the problem of pain
Stay up to date with Christian news in Europe? Sign up for CNE's newsletter. Many sceptics claim that the existence of evil is proof of God's non-existence. Many people justify their lack of faith by claiming that there cannot be a good God if there is so much suffering in the world.
The Notre Dame is impressive but don't forget your local church
When the well-known French cathedral Notre Dame suffered a devastating fire in 2019, the world grieved the damage done to a beloved icon. “Notre Dame is our history, our literature, part of our psyche, the place of all our great events, our epidemics, our wars, our liberations, the epicentre of our lives,” French President Macron commented at the time.
Which Church in Revelation Is Yours Like?
Like the lukewarm Laodicea, these seven ancient congregations struggled with relatable problems. Revelation is often interpreted out of context based on current concerns and fearful speculations about the end times. But after a study trip to Turkey-and years of teaching Revelation at my local church in Rome and for conferences-I have come to realize how contextual the book is.
From geographical shift to Polycentric Christianity
As I packed my bags for Lausanne Movement’s Fourth Global Congress held from September 22nd to 28th in South Korea, I found it helpful to reflect on four ways Lausanne 3 in Cape Town shaped me 14 years ago. And as I return from Seoul and unpack the same bags, I couldn’t help but think about what last week’s gathering meant for me and circa 5,000 delegates from more than 200 nations.
