1. Introduction The Global Burden of Disease Study reports that cardiovascular disease has remained the leading cause of global mortality over the past two decades [1]. In South Africa, cardiovascular disease was responsible for 18% of all deaths in 2018 [2] and was reported as the leading cause of death in the same year [3]. Active monitoring of cardiovascular parameters using technologies such as photoplethysmography (PPG) can play a crucial role in addressing this pressing health concern.
