Francis Ford Coppola on Books That Influenced “Megalopolis”
“Megalopolis,” Francis Ford Coppola’s four-decades-in-the-making epic of a decadent society, was released last week. It stars Adam Driver as Cesar Catilina, an aristocratic polymath who has a controversial proposal to revitalize the city where he lives. Coppola drew his story from antiquity—Driver’s character is based on a Roman politician, Lucius Sergius Catilina (who lived from 108 to 62 B.C., and is known in English as Catiline), who tried to take over the Roman Republic and failed.

A Unifying Framework
Contribution to GTI Forum What’s Next for the Global Movement? We are all working for the same goal: a more equitable and peaceful world where caring for people and nature is a top social and economic priority. But we are doing this in separate silos and with thinking and institutions that cannot solve the problems they created. On top of this, we face a backward push worldwide to authoritarianism, inequality, violence, and unsustainability.
Through-Lines of Domination
Contribution to GTI Forum Big History and Great Transition In his opening essay, David Christian emphasizes the power and importance of a shared story for humanity. Indeed, a new story about our past and present is fundamental to building a better future. Key to this is an interdisciplinary analysis of human nature and human cultural possibilities. This piece starts with the first and then focuses on the second.
Shifting the Paradigm
With his 1962 The Structure of Scientific Revolutions Thomas Kuhn launched the concept of paradigm shift which could be applied to a variety of historical cultural changes as well as desired future ones. Increasingly people are calling for a worldview shift to address our crises with climate, capitalism, social life and more.
Rabelais in Russia, or the man on a chair in a hat
I recently reread Mikhail Bakhtin’s mind-blowing book Rabelais and His World. On the face of it, a book about the fantastical literary imaginings of a 16th century writer by a long-dead philosopher from Soviet Russia probably shouldn’t loom too large in the reading list of a contemporary blogger writing about farming, ecology and politics. And yet. Here, I’m going to lay down a few waymarks, and come back to them in future posts.

Feminist books that have influenced my understanding of the world: Part I
Last year during Black History month, I made three posts about books dealing with the Black Freedom Struggle that influenced how I saw the world. Now that we are in Women’s History Month, I want to do the same thing in regards to books by women, particularly feminists that influenced my understanding of the world.
Transcending Inherited Narratives
We are all working for the same goal: a more equitable and peaceful world where caring for people and nature is a top social and economic priority. But we are doing this in separate silos and with thinking and institutions that cannot solve the problems they created. On top of this, we face a backward push worldwide to authoritarianism, inequality, violence, and unsustainability.
Riane Eisler and Tao Lin on shifting our cultural paradigm
For Document, the two authors meet to discuss the role of law in shaping society, the allure of prehistory, and how to adopt new modes of thinking Riane Eisler was born in 1931 in Vienna, Austria. In 1939, she and her parents fled the Nazi invasion of their country. They went to Havana, Cuba, where they lived in an industrial slum for seven years before moving to the US and settling in Los Angeles.
Breaking Out of the Domination Trance
Article Partnership Society Remarks at the 2018 Safe Ireland Summit | Dublin, Ireland I have been asked to tell you about the findings from my research identifying the core components of a safer, more equitable, and caring world—especially one where women and children are finally safe—a goal that is very close to my heart.
Reclaiming Spiritual Wholeness
In Isaiah 11:6-9 and Hosea 2:18, we read of a world with no more war or killing. But in Numbers 31 and Deuteronomy 20, we find divine commands to raze cities and kill every living being in them. Jesus preached love and peace. But Revelations 12-19 tells of “the wrath of God upon the earth” and how mass killings are unleashed by divine violence. How did we get these conflicting messages? How can we sort them out so our scriptures can no longer be used to incite hate and violence?

“Leave Society”: An Interview With Tao Lin — Countere Magazine
People often read Countere and the first question they ask me is: “Who is the director behind the site?” The answer is more enigmatic than people expect. After proposing a feature on Tao Lin, I received an email back from the general contact inbox telling me to expect the Editor-in-Chief of the magazine himself to be in touch.

Why a Love Deficit Could Be the Reason for the World's Biggest Problems
It is hardly news that love makes us feel good. Most of us have experienced these feelings when we love and are loved. Indeed, spiritual seers have long told us that love is the key to fulfillment, contentment, and joy. But love does much more for us, individually and collectively, than evoking well-being and pleasure. Our human capacity for love actually played a major role in the emergence and survival of our species.
The fight between capitalism and socialism will be won be a totally different “ism”
For some, this is a time of unprecedented prosperity and growth. Yet the gap between haves and have-nots is widening. Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet continue to control the same amount of wealth as the bottom 50% of Americans combined.

How to Create a Thriving Global Commons Economy
Not since Marx identified Manchester’s manufacturing plants as blueprints for the new capitalist society have our political economy’s fundamentals faced a more profound transformation. As structural crises beset capitalism, a new mode of production is emerging: commons-based peer production. Why is this emerging mode of production so important in discussions about post-capitalist futures?

Partnerism: Post-Capitalist/Post-Socialist Economics
In our time of unprecedented economic, social, technological, and environmental change, awareness of the need for new economic thinking is growing. Yet most government and business policies are still made looking through a rearview mirror. This article outlines a new post-capitalist and post-socialist economic system. It describes building blocks for a new economics of partnerism that recognizes that our real wealth consists of the contributions of people and of nature.
Solidarity Economy: Building an Economy for People & Planet
We stand at the brink of disaster. The fragilities of the 2008 global economic meltdown remain, prompting warnings of another financial collapse from the likes of billionaire financier George Soros and the International Monetary Fund. Inequality in wealth and income are at historic highs, with all of the attendant dangers of concentrated wealth and power, along with the burdens that fall disproportionately on communities of color and low-income communities. Our ecosystem is in crisis.
How To Use Building Blocks Towards Our Global Future
Art Credit: MaxPixel. (CC 2.0) We have a choice. We can futilely try to protect ourselves and our families behind high walls, electric gates, and "Star Wars" missile shield technologies, and turn a blind eye toward chronic human rights violations and an economic globalization that is not accountable to anyone.
Unpaid and Undervalued Care Work Keeps Women on the Brink
By Riane Eisler and Kimberly Otis, Center for Partnership Studies[1] Women do most of the care work in families; they care for children, the elderly, the sick, and the disabled. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, women devote more than 110 million hours a year to unpaid interactive child care, more than double men’s less than 55 million hours.[2] This care work is socially and economically essential.
Nurturing Children’s Humanity: Partnership Education
Abstract This article proposes that the unprecedented challenges of our rapidly changing world require more than piecemeal educational reform. It describes partnership education as an integrated template for redesigning the three main components of education: content, process, and structure. In addition, it provides examples of how various elements of partnership education can be incorporated into current classrooms, both in schools and universities.
Building an Integrated Progressive Agenda: The Post Election Crisis and Its Opportunities
Riane Eisler, President, Center for Partnership Studies The 2016 election laid bare the urgent need for an integrated progressive agenda. Our challenge is to prevent cyclical regressions that cause so much suffering and hold us back from building a more equitable and caring world. Meeting this challenge is a long-term project based on an in-depth analysis of what lies behind the 2016 election results.

The Shift From Domination to Partnership: At Home, At Work, Worldwide, and with Nature
Twenty-five years ago, I stood at a turning point. I had to rethink everything about my life. I was the single mother of two children, working as a family attorney, doing research, writing, lecturing, looking for the life companion I yearned for, grieving over the death of both my parents, not getting enough sleep, not paying attention to what I ate, pushing myself until I nearly collapsed. I became so ill that at times I thought I might die.
