Chiefs Stop Raiders, Take Control of AFC West - ESPN 98.1 FM - 850 AM WRUF
The Oakland Raiders seem to have found their Achilles’ Heel. Unfortunately for them, that Achilles’ Heel is in their very own division. The team hadn’t lost a game since October 16, winning six straight games. The team they lost to on October 16? Kansas City.
Women's Basketball: Seminoles Win Big Over Gators - ESPN 98.1 FM - 850 AM WRUF
Unfortunately for Gator fans, the Florida State Seminoles’ dominance in the football field seems to have carried over to the world of women’s basketball. The No.7 Seminoles downed the Gators by a score of 83-58 last night. While the final score certainly doesn’t reflect this, the Gators were in the game in the early going. However, FSU used a 10-0 run near the end of the first quarter to separate themselves.
NBA Recap: Magic Stumble, Fall to Celtics 117-87 - ESPN 98.1 FM - 850 AM WRUF
Despite playing without star Isaiah Thomas, the Boston Celtics showed offensive prowess over the Orlando Magic and routed the home team by 30 points. While it’s almost impossible to replace the production of your top scorer, the Celtics that were healthy certainly filled in last night. SEC Well-represented in Bowl Season - ESPN 98.1 FM - 850 AM WRUF
While the SEC may have dropped off a bit in the eyes of the college football world, what’s long been regarded as the nation’s top conference still received plenty of love on Bowl Selection Day. Twelve teams will be representing the SEC in a bowl, which ties for the most ever from one conference (12 in 2014). Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl (CFP Semifinal) Top ranked Alabama will be taking on No.4 Washington in the first 2016 CFP semifinal game.
Saban and McElwain Make for Familiar Foes in the SEC Championship Game - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
The 2016 SEC Championship Game will not only be a rematch between Florida and Alabama, it will also be a rematch between Nick Saban and Jim McElwain. History Saban and one of his former proteges in McElwain are certainly no strangers, with McElwain having spent four seasons as the offensive coordinator at Alabama under Saban. While there, Saban and McElwain won two national championships before McElwain became head coach at Colorado State.
Becky Burleigh: Gator Soccer Seniors Leave Behind A Legacy - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
For head coach Becky Burleigh, Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Auburn was heart-wrenching for a number of reasons. It meant the Gators were knocked out of the NCAA tournament. It meant she wouldn’t lead the team to their first national championship since 1998. Perhaps the most heart-breaking part of it all, it meant Sunday was the last time this year’s senior class would play together. Seniors like Savannah Jordan and Brooke Sharp will be remembered by fans for their goal scoring heroics.
Junior College Volleyball: Santa Fe Saints Partaking in 2016 NJCAA Volleyball Championships - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
The Santa Fe Saints women’s volleyball team will be taking part in the NJCAA Volleyball championships. While the NJCAA tournament doesn’t quite as much press coverage, being an eight-seed in a national tournament is absolutely nothing to sneeze at. The Saints (17-11) had a successful season under third-year head coach Nick Cheronis. The team averaged 10.76 kills per set, 2.56 blocks per set, and had a hitting percentage of .218.
Gator Soccer Gets No.1 Seed in NCAA Tournament - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
The 2016 Division I women’s soccer championship bracket was officially announced earlier today. The Florida Gator soccer team is a No.1 region seed. The Gators will be hosting the FGCU Eagles from Donald R. Dizney Stadium on Friday, November 11. Fresh off of winning the SEC tournament this past weekend, the Gators will certainly come into the matchup as the favorites. The Eagles, on the other hand, are coming off of an A-SUN championsship.
Carl Edwards Wins, Advances to NASCAR Sprint Cup Finale - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
The 41 laps of a rain-shortened race were all Carl Edwards needed to take home the checkered flag at Texas Motor Speedway. Even more, the victory clinched a spot for Edwards in the “Championship 4” of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series chase. Edwards joined Jimmie Johnson as the first two drivers to clinch a championship-contending spot at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Finale. The remaining two spots will be decided next Sunday at Phoenix.
Scott Stricklin Starting First Day as UF AD - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
Scott Stricklin is now just one day away from officially starting his tenure in what he called the best job in college athletics. With much of the (well-deserved) attention on Monday being Jeremy Foley’s last day as the University of Florida’s Athletic Director, just as important is Tuesday marking Stricklin’s first day in his new office. With over 28 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, the former Mississippi State AD is certainly qualified.
Luke Del Rio Returning to a Familiar Setting - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
For Luke Del Rio, there were certainly some perks to being the son of an NFL head coach. Ahead of his biggest start to date as the Gator quarterback however, who knew that getting tea for the Jaguar players as a youngster would make the now-Everbank Field a familiar place. Fixable Offense When the Florida Gators take on the Georgia Bulldogs this Saturday, plenty of eyes will be on the man under center for the Gator offense.
Gator Basketball: Dontay Bassett to Miss 2016-2017 Season - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
Freshman forward Dontay Bassett will redshirt during the 2016-17 season after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right foot. There were certainly high hopes for Dontay Bassett going into this season for the Gators. Bassett was a three-star recruit out of Oldsmar Christian High School in Oldsmar, Florida. With the Eagles, Bassett served as the team captain as his team made it to the SIAA state championship.
Penalties One of the Blemishes on Gator Homecoming Win - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
In their 40-14 win over Missouri, the Florida football team committed 11 penalties for 65 yards. While some may abide by the “win is a win” mentality, this is one of the things the Gators must clean up moving forward. Penalties A Pain While outpacing the Tigers in almost every other category, the Gators committed more than twice as many penalties in their win. With 11 penalties as compared to the Tigers’ five, one can wonder how many points were left on the board for the Gators.
McElwain on LSU Rescheduling, Mizzou, and Del Rio - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
Florida head coach Jim McElwain spoke to the media in his weekly press conference today, but the circumstances were not exactly traditional. Hurricane Matthew Wrecks Game Plan The Gators are coming off what essentially turned into a bye week as their game against LSU this past Saturday was suspended due to Hurricane Mathew. While thankfully the storm did limited damage to the Gainesville area, the decision was made on Thursday to postpone the game.
Gator Football: McElwain on Win Over Vandy, LSU and Injuries - ESPN Gainesville 95.3 FM - WRUF
While it certainly wasn’t pretty, head coach Jim McElwain and the rest of the Florida Gator Football team did notch another one in the win column after Saturday’s 13-6 victory over Vanderbilt. While only racking up 236 total yards of total offense in the win—29 fewer yards than the Commodores—McElwain said it felt great to pick up the win on the road. Noon Kickoff Being able to pick up a road victory in the SEC is always a difficult thing to do—especially with an early noon start time.
McElwain Speaks on Loss, Injuries and Vanderbilt
After a heartbreaking 38-28 result against the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday, Head Coach Jim McElwain and his No.23 Florida Gator football team know the re-grouping process of the first loss to the Volunteers since 2004 can’t last very long. McElwain did admit earlier today that the mood in the locker room after the game was one of anger and frustration, but the Gators hope that will only serve as motivation for what is still a very young season.
Dak Prescott Impressive Through Two NFL Starts
It’s difficult to say that the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys is ever under the radar, but rookie Dak Prescott out of Mississippi State might have just been that when the 2016 NFL season kicked off. With much of the attention going into the season on the injury to Tony Romo and No. 4 overall pick Ezekiel Elliott, people didn’t really know what to make of the fourth round pick in Prescott when he was named the starter.
Gator Men’s Golf Finishes Fifth in Season Opener
The Florida Gator men’s golf team teed off in their first tournament this season over the weekend, coming in a tie for fifth place at the Carpet Capital Classic. The tournament was ultimately won by the University of Virginia, and for Gators head coach J.C. Deacon, this fifth place finish was a disappointing one. Deacon believes his players have the ability to be among the elite in the country, and hopes that in time his team will grow into that.
Young Gator Volleyball Team off to 1-1 start
With three players making their first career starts, and five others making their debut for the Gators, there was certainly the feel of a less-experienced team for Mary Wise’s side this past Friday in their 3 sets to 1 loss against top-ranked Nebraska. While a younger side could mean some struggles in the beginning, head coach Mary Wise believes it is only a matter of time before the team’s strengths really shine through.
Blake Bortles Looks Sharp Through 2 NFL Preseason Games
Although the Jaguars have lost their first two games this preseason, there is still reason for optimism in Jacksonville once the games start counting come September. Much of that optimism centers on the play of quarterback Blake Bortles, who threw for two touchdowns and had a quarterback rating of 134.5 in the Jaguar’s 27-21 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday. Bortles himself has said he feels more comfortable in the system this year, specifically in the red zone.
