Ohio Corn: Will Late Fields Reach Black Layer Before a Killing Frost?
Ohio saw record late corn planting in 2019. According to the Agricultural Statistics Service, only 33% of Ohio’s corn was planted by June 2. The question being asked now is will the June planted corn reach physiological maturity (black layer) before a killing frost? Corn is killed when temperatures are near 32°F for a few hours and when temperatures are near 28°F for a few minutes.
Select appropriate hybrid maturity for June planting
June 7, 2019 Crops, Top Headlines By Alexander Lindsey, Rich Minyo, Allen Geyer, Peter Thomison, Ohio State University Extension Farmers who still anticipate planting corn for grain production should review their hybrid maturities to minimize the risk of corn not maturing safely prior to a killing fall freeze. We would encourage the use of the Corn GDD Tool to select “safe” hybrid maturities for late planting (http://www.kingcorn.org/news/timeless/HybridMaturityDelayedPlant.html).

Ohio Corn: Harvest Delays Impact Crop Performance
Leaving corn to dry in the field exposes a crop to unfavorable weather conditions, as well as wildlife damage. A crop with weak plant integrity is more vulnerable to yield losses from stalk lodging and ear drop when weathering conditions occur. Additional losses may occur when ear rots reduce grain quality and can lead to significant dockage when the grain is marketed. Some ear rots produce mycotoxins, which may cause major health problems if fed to livestock.
Assessing the success or failure of pollination in corn
By Peter Thomison, Rich Minyo Many Ohio corn fields have been subject to excessive rainfall this year. The fields where the Ohio Corn Performance Test (OCPT) were planted are no exception. Extraordinary rainfall accumulation has occurred at nearly all OCPT sites. Rainfall accumulations from May 15 to July 18-19 (and there’s been more since then) range from 14.0 to 19.1 inches at test sites in the southwest/west central/central region.
