Polls Fuel Democratic Hopes of a Midterm Wave, Raising the Bar for Election Night
Democrats head into the final two weeks of the 2026 midterm campaign with polling numbers that have lifted their expectations to levels few in the party would have predicted earlier this year. That optimism carries a risk of its own, according to a CNN analysis published Tuesday: if Democrats fall short of capturing both the House and the Senate, Republicans may be in a position to claim they held back the wave.
CNN Threatens New Legal Action Over Exclusion From Air Force One Press Pool
CNN is threatening to escalate its legal fight with the Trump administration over press access, accusing the White House of keeping the network’s crews off Air Force One even after a federal judge ordered its White House credentials restored.
USDA Unveils $8 Billion ‘Harvest Fuel Relief’ Program as Diesel Costs Squeeze Farmers
The Agriculture Department will send $8 billion in one-time payments to farmers hit by soaring fuel and input costs this year, Secretary Brooke Rollins announced late Monday after President Donald Trump campaigned in Kansas. The money will not reach farmers before the Nov. 3 election. Rollins announced the Harvest Fuel Relief program after Trump’s rally in Wichita for Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., whose reelection race The Cook Political Report rates as a toss-up, DTN reported.
Trump Waives New Russia Tariffs and Sanctions, Drawing Fire From Republicans
President Donald Trump signed an executive order Friday that implements a new Russia sanctions law but waives its most punishing provisions, including tariffs of up to 500% on Russian goods, setting off a bipartisan backlash that continued into this week. The order, issued Oct. 16, carries out the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, according to a summary by the accounting firm KPMG.
Alberta Voters Decisively Reject Path to Separation From Canada
Voters in Alberta, Canada’s oil-rich western province, delivered a lopsided verdict on independence Monday, with roughly three in four choosing to remain in Canada rather than start down the road to a binding separation vote. KMBC and the Wichita Eagle reported that hecklers interrupted the rally, and that Trump called them paid protesters.
North Korean Media Showed Kim at Pyongyang Exhibition After Unverified Death Rumors
Rumors that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was in a coma or dead drove a sharp rise in U.S. searches Monday. Searches for “is kim jong un still alive” topped 200,000 on Google, making it the top politics trend of the day. The claims trace largely to social media posts by Wanjun Xie, chairman of the China Democracy Party, an exile opposition group. Xie wrote on X that Kim, 42, had a severe cerebral hemorrhage.

America Owes Mahmoud Khalil Nothing
Pro-terrorist activist Mahmoud Khalil was asked by CNN the other day if he would condemn Hamas. He, of course, would not, calling the question “silly” and “disingenuous.” It is not “black and white,” he whined. Even if you oppose Israel’s reaction to the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre, the answer is still black and white for any person with a conscience. Certainly, it should be for any person who wants to become a naturalized citizen of the United States.

Constitutional Rights You Should Understand When Dealing With Police in Nevada
An interaction with police can happen unexpectedly. You might be stopped while driving, questioned about something that happened nearby, contacted because investigators believe you have information about an incident, or taken into custody after an arrest. In any of these situations, knowing your basic constitutional rights can help you understand what is happening and make informed decisions.

The Night Linden Avenue Stopped Feeling Safe
EDGEWOOD, Pennsylvania — The Evans family threw a Halloween party every year in their backyard on Linden Avenue. Neighbor Jeannine Fisher told WPXI, the local NBC affiliate, that she remembers “tons of people and kids” there. She also remembers the first time she met Idris Evans: He helped carry her groceries from down the street to her house. It’s the kind of street where that still happens.

Iran Claims Strait of Hormuz to Stay Closed Until Demands are Met
Iran said Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz will stay closed until the United States meets seven conditions drawn from a June interim understanding, rejecting any reopening on Washington’s timetable even as ships continue to slip through the waterway. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, Iran’s lead negotiator, said American officials had sent proposals through a mediator in recent days that differed from what Washington was saying in public. He dismissed them.

A Leaner Federal Workforce Is a Win for Taxpayers
One of the most unheralded policy successes of President Donald Trump’s second term has been the purging of many unnecessary federal jobs. The federal government has reduced its workforce by 300,000 jobs since Jan. 20, 2025, bringing it down to a still-bulky 2.7 million employees. Not since President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society vastly expanded the scope of the national government has the federal workforce been at this level.

Yes, You Must Vote
Any time spent on social media — X in particular — makes it very clear that conservative Americans are utterly fed up with congressional Republicans. And with good reason. The current (119th) Congress has set records for what The Washington Post called “low legislative output” — second only to the 118th. To be fair, Speaker Mike Johnson and the House of Representatives have been giving it the old college try.
