Weatherby Shaped Ascot, International Racing

Sir Johnny Weatherby, a member of one of racing's most famous families, and whose many achievements in the sport included modernizing Ascot, died Dec. 18 at the age of 66. Weatherby, whose family firm Weatherbys is primarily responsible for providing racing administration services to the British Horseracing Authority, followed his father Christopher as chair of the business in 1993.

This year's 2-year-old program has marched on without bringing the horses with it. The division is still forming ahead of Newmarket's 6-furlong Middle Park Stakes (G1) Sept. 27, which has as strong a claim as any to be the last real leading 2-year-old race of the campaign in the sense that the Dewhurst Stakes (G1) and Fillies' Mile (G1) are as much about next season's classics.

Rival Trainers Keen to Take on Ballydoyle in St Leger

During the last five years Paddy Twomey has sent out 133 winners from 462 runners on the flat in Ireland for an impressive strike rate of 29%. The trainer has yet to make the same sort of impact with his British raiders, having saddled only two winners from 22 runners in the same period, but one of those successes came in the Queen's Vase (G2) at Royal Ascot with talented stayer .
