Letter: Here's a second opinion on the Civil War, Doctor

To the editor — The April 20 letter by Dr. Whitmont said that the American Civil War was fought to "deny the inequality of slavery." Nothing could be a bigger falsehood than that statement. I would challenge Dr. Whitmont to show Yakima Herald-Republic readers anything written in 1861 which says that slavery was a major reason for the war. In fact, the constitutions of both Oregon and Indiana both prohibited Blacks from living in their state.
