This Men’s Health Month, advances in anesthesia are quietly protecting the men hit hardest by opioids
June is Men’s Health Month, and this year it brings rare good news about one of the deadliest threats men face. In May, the CDC reported that opioid deaths declined for a third consecutive year in 2025. As an anesthesiologist, I find that progress especially meaningful: men account for roughly 70 percent of opioid overdose deaths and die at about 2.5 times the rate of women. If this epidemic has always hit men hardest, the recent decline is, in a real sense, their reprieve.
A retrospective analysis of T1 erector spinae plane blocks compared to multimodal pain management alone in first rib resections for patients with thoracic outlet syndrome
Erector spinae plane blocks (ESPB), a new and increasingly popular technique for controlling thoracic pain, have typically been performed around the T5 level. Using a T1 ESPB for first rib resections in patients with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) might offer better pain control relative to the current standard of intravenous multimodal pain management alone. All first rib resections for patients with TOS during an 18-month period (n = 380) were analyzed.

We read with interest the article by Manchec and colleagues (1), which correlated outcomes following catheter-directed thrombolysis of acute submassive pulmonary embolus with the anesthetic agents used for procedural sedation. It is commendable to see a review of cases in this emerging and still high-risk area of hospital practice.
