St George’s Hill, Damoulianata, Kefalonia
Last summer, one day stands out. While on holiday on the Ionian island of Kefalonia, I persuaded three friends to spend a morning investigating a castle that has intrigued me. Situated on a high hill, the ruins command breathtaking views of the island’s mountains and blissful seaways. Picturesque though this place is, it is its association (which may be true or false) with an 11th-century anti-hero – Robert Guiscard – that has gripped my imagination.

Opinion: Lawmakers must find ways to lower prescription drug costs
As the former Ohio Director of Health, I know how important it is to do everything in our power to bring down the cost of prescription drugs. And, as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, which has taken a significant toll on too many hardworking families across our state, access to affordable health care options is more critical than ever. Unfortunately, there are forces at work in our state that are trying to make health care more expensive for consumers and restrict access to quality care.

The advance party reached their final destination on July 24th, 1847. ‘A broad and barren plain hemmed in by mountains ... the paradise of the lizard, the cricket and the rattlesnake' was one description of the sight that met the advance party of 'latter day saints' arriving in the American far West in July 1847 after a six-month trek from the Missouri River.

Saratoga medical clinic remains open, receiving patients
SARATOGA – For nearly a month the pressure has been building over whether the lease between Health Management Services (HMS) and the Saratoga Town Council would be altered or canceled. No decision on the lease was made at the June 4th public Town Council meeting. The Saratoga Clinic, operated by Karl Rude-owned HMS, remains open and receiving patients, as both parties agreed to continue talking while searching for a solution to HMS’s inability to meet all the terms of the current lease.
Picts, Pins, Stones and Bones
Archaeology can provide new historical narratives for familiar places. The excavations at Portmahomack on Tarbat Ness, beyond the Great Glen on the north-east coast of Scotland, have enriched a story anchored around the 12th-century foundation of St Colman’s. Nearly two decades of excavations, now reported in this elegantly illustrated volume, show that the saint’s legacy is just one episode in an entangled history. The major episodes vividly described here make fascinating reading.
Nomura's Dickie Hodges: The risk rally may have further to run - Fund Strategy
Government bonds sold off in the early part of March as faster-rising rate expectations and risk-on behaviour drove risk markets higher. Economic data continued to be positive, and employment especially so. This came to an abrupt halt after the US administration’s proposed healthcare bill received such a cold reception from Congress that it was withdrawn without being put to the vote.
Richard Hodges: How we're positioned for the months ahead - Fund Strategy
January was an eye-popping month in political circles, if relatively quiet within the markets. The newly inaugurated President Trump departed from all political norms by actually carrying out election campaign promises. Oil pipelines are to be laid (with American pipe!), walls built, refugees halted, healthcare denied, tariffs raised. The market viewed this as being highly supportive of US company earnings, and US equities hit new highs, whilst government bonds sold off.
Albania’s Executioner Unmasked
Few leaders have published as much and eliminated more people than Enver Hoxha, Albania’s dictator from 1944 to 1985. Hoxha published on a Churchillian scale: 7,000 pages in 13 volumes of memoirs. Simultaneously, during his rule, of Albania’s population of two million, 5,037 men and 450 women were executed; 16,788 men and 7,367 women were convicted and sentenced to imprisonment; over 70,000 people were interned in the country’s 39 prisons and 70 camps.
Optimization of a C++ code (that uses UnorderedMap and Vector)
I am trying to optimize some part of a C++ code that is taking a long time (the following part of the code takes about 19 seconds for X amount of data, and I am trying to finish the whole process in less than 5 seconds for the same amount of data - based on some benchmarks that I have). I have a function "add" that I have written and copied the code here. I will try to explain as much as possible that I think is needed to understand the code. Please let me know if I have missed something.
Why can't I define a function inside another function?
You can do these things, largely because they're actually not all that difficult to do. From the viewpoint of the compiler, having a function declaration inside another function is pretty trivial to implement. The compiler needs a mechanism to allow declarations inside of functions to handle other declarations (e.g., ) inside a function anyway. It will typically have a general mechanism for parsing a declaration.
NEW V.I.A. FEATURE: Eastside Lights
Well, not as a whole. The neighbourhood is severely problematic, for all the reasons you’ve heard about time and time again, and they’re the type of issues that will probably never go away. Life is a daily struggle in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. For “Canada’s poorest postal code”, the constant coverage of doom and gloom make the entire thing seem as bleak as an episode of The Wire. But there are individual parts of the area that can be absolutely awesome.
