Letter: Saddened by threats
By Richard Mandsager Updated: 1 day ago Published: 1 day ago I was saddened to read last week about threats to Dr. Anne Zink and her family. In my opinion, Dr. Zink has served all of us Alaskans incredibly well. She is articulate (oral speech, written communication and social media), incredibly knowledgable, compassionate and thoughtful. She also makes herself available to all of us for questions and comments. I served in the same position as Dr. Zink during Gov. Frank Murkowski’s term (2004-2006).
We must keep moving forward to reduce homelessness in Anchorage
Right before Thanksgiving, Acting Mayor Austin Quinn-Davidson announced that the Municipality of Anchorage was no longer pursuing purchase of the old Alaska Club on Tudor Road. Readers will remember the debate last summer about possible purchase of four properties to help individuals experiencing homelessness.
Filling the gaps in Anchorage’s safety net
Can we get our city ‘to be more like Sully’? I want to thank the mayor and the Anchorage Assembly for developing a plan for smaller, distributed adult day and night shelters with engagement centers. The COVID-19 pandemic has enabled us to learn a great deal about the positive impacts that happen when there is more space for people experiencing homelessness and when we provide a resource hub.
We support an Anchorage municipal alcohol tax
We represent some of Anchorage’s biggest employers and most significant institutions. We are concerned about public safety and homelessness in our community and want to help create a safer, more livable space. We are the Anchorage Homelessness Leadership Council, and we believe the proposed retail alcohol sales tax (Ballot Proposition 9) is urgently needed to restore the quality of our public places and to assist chronically homeless residents into permanent housing.
How we plan to solve homelessness in Anchorage
We're not starting from scratch. Anchored Home's scale, unity, collaboration and realism are the new elements the community is committing to. We know we will not end homelessness in Anchorage by 2021. But we can do better. We can achieve functional zero. That's what we aim to build in Anchorage. Reach functional zero and we will have a city in which homelessness is mostly a rare, brief and one-time experience. We don't want those words to be a rote slogan, but a description of reality.
