Turns and Twists

What’s the problem with this little story? At first sight, it’s not too bad. There is a main character, a goal, a complication, and a resolution. It also employs one of JJ Abrams’ favorite techniques: the mystery box. The idea with the mystery box (which doesn’t have to be a literal box) is that once you setup a mystery in your story, the reader (or viewer) will be immediately more engaged. You drop a box on top of a table, and everyone wants to know what’s in it.

Calling a Spade a Shovel

Picture this: A family of four, barricaded in the living room of their quaint suburban home. Mom, Dad, Boy, and Little Baby Girl. Noises seep in from the outside, grunts and growls and snarls and a throaty sort of clicking. Dad sneaks a peak through the curtained window, where people-shaped things shamble on his lawn. One of them Dad recognizes. Mr. Mercer. A good guy on all counts — lent Dad a buzz saw for the garage job; always picked up the dog poop, though Dad never saw him with a dog.

The Axis of Upheaval

In the early morning of January 2, Russian forces launched a massive missile attack on the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Kharkiv that killed at least five civilians, injured more than 100, and damaged infrastructure. The incident was notable not just for the harm it caused but also because it showed that Russia was not alone in its fight. The Russian attack that day was carried out with weapons fitted with technology from China, missiles from North Korea, and drones from Iran.
