What was your first job as a journalist?

Not a journalist, I'm a professor who writes op-eds. But I am actually co-hosting a radio show on KUT (NPR in Austin) on Black experiences.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

yes, I learned to type on an IBM Selectric

Why did you become a journalist?

I am interested and curious about society!

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Yes, I was a columnist!

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I was asked by the BBC to comment on Childish Gambino's "This is America," as they read an opinion piece that mentioned it.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I'm a professor so usually I get asked about topics I know about, so none.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Higher education? That higher ed is a liberal institution.
